I agree with Ban on the height, but any height will seem awkward at first. You'll just have to see what suits you best.

For less than $5 a pack, they're not too bad for stock removal/reprofiling. For sharpening/honing an existing edge, though, I'd look for some finer grit belts. I found the 4000 and 8000 grit on e**y.c*m. I got ten of each from there. I think the seller calls herself the sandpaper lady.
