I did that with my crash axe and a couple small cheap EDCs I have. I found the grip too slippery for when I'm out in wet weather, or wearing gloves in the winter, so I wrapped them with some cord. Also, for those cheap little knives, it bulks up the handle a little better so its' more comfortable to work with.
As well on the CA, the D-guard, handle wrap, and lanyard is all one piece.
It may sound excessive, but it serves two purposes; secure grip for poor weather, and spare cord, should it ever be needed; say for example, I lose my pack with my normal carry of 100' cord. Chances are very unlikely that I'll lose both my pack
AND the axe strapped to my hip and leg.

P.S. - If you're also curious about the 3 little chunks of wood and the coin on the lanyard. Well, the wood can be broken up and added to any kindling, moss, etc. you find to make a fire in an emergency, and the coin is a lucky 5 yen coin I was given by a Japanese soldier I served with overseas (Not Afghanistan, different tour, same general area of the world, though). It's a good luck piece and so I usually have it with me when I'm in the woods. Sounds kinda corny, I guess.
