If it didn't knock out the mugger, it would sure buy you some valuable time to make your exit.

IF!? IF!? I think you’re underestimating it. It is incredibly heavy and dense. As you can see, it’s smaller than a bic lighter, yet it weighs 8 oz! I have before taken a .50 cal lead ball, and threw it really hard from one hand to the other. Do it hard enough and it hurts pretty bad. And they weigh very little. On a cord, the longer you make it = more leaverage = harder you can hit with it. Try an experiment. Go find the largest sinker in your tackle box, or biggest lead muzzleloader ball you have. Try throwing it hard from one hand to the other. See whatcha think.

But be careful, if you make the cord too long, it’s hard to control and you can hurt yourself. Several years ago a friend of mine made one of these but he used a 1 oz sinker. He was lightly swinging it around, and he flipped it wrong and hit himself in the head. He woke up on the floor. Imagine if you swing one as hard as you can that’s 8 times heavier than that. I think anywhere on a body that you’d hit with this would take someone down. These are much more damaging than an ASP, and waaaaaay cheaper. I always thought I could probably clean up at a gunshow if I made a bunch of these and sold em for like $5 each.

A padlock on the cord would have similar effect...

Yeah, that’s what they do in prison. A lock in a sock. But, a decent lock probably couldn’t be found for this cheap. And if you bought a really cheap lock, it might pop open when you swing it and fly off and hit you. And, a lock wouldn’t be as dense. Density focuses the weight of the object on a smaller area to do more damage than a less dense object. Like for instance, a 3” square of aluminum wouldn’t hurt as bad as being hit with a 3” square of steel…or 3” square of lead. Gold is about TWICE as dense as lead, but that would be unaffordable for this. Maybe that’s why the rappers like the big bling necklaces. They can swing ‘em as a weapon if need be.

I’ll give ya one more variation on this idea. You take a baseball cap, and attach a smaller, heavy sinker to the back. Inside, outside, whatever. I would sew it on with some really strong kevlar type cord. Then, if you need to defend yourself, you just grab the bill and swing it. They’d never see it coming. If you need to worry about keeping it legal, you also can attach some fishing line, and a couple small taped hooks (for safety) inside the edge of the lining. Then, it’s not a weapon…it’s your emergency fishing kit! But, I was doing this way before Jerry thought of it.
