Where I come from "I'd do whatever it takes to protect them" never would pertain to your pets. Other humans yes, pets never. I hope you mean within reason not knowingly putting your life on the line or taking another life.
I was raised where animals are alot like guns. Cherished and respected but both tools.
If you would possibly shoot someone for stealing something I do not see why that something could not be your dog.
