I wanted to ask about peoples experience with air guns, but didn't want it getting lost in the firearms thread. I figure it's a different enough area of shooting to stand on it's own.

I was visiting family yesturday and my brother had a new .22 gamo (?) that we shot a litte. Thing was loud but boy did it crush cans! It got me thinking that an airgun would be a good addition but I haven't had one since I was a kid and figure some of you guys (like Randy smile ) know about them.

For me, I think of them as a tool for teaching the kids to shoot and as a good emergency tool for small game. What are the good brands and models that are out there?

I have a Ruger Air Hawk that shoots .177 pellets at 1,000 fps. It shoots through some tin cans. It is a "break barrel" action.

There are several good companies out there; Gamo, Sheridan and Benjamin are just a few.

Mine is an RWS Diana model 45 in .177. NOW I wish that I had gotten a .22 as you can now get them that will shoot about 1000fps on a single cocking . Don't know about tin cans but I have killed 12 Skunks with my .177 and all but one were One shot, One Kill. The one that took two shots was about 20-25 (maybe even 30 but I don't think so) yards away and IF I had hit where I was aiming it would also have been a 1 shot kill. First Skunk I killed. Oh and I shot a 10 pound tom cat out of a tree about 20 feet up. One shot to the head, dead cat on the ground. (It was attacking other people's pets on the block).

Mine I bought back in 1991 so they have improved since then. Personally I don't like CO2 guns or "Pre charged" air guns. I also like Tom prefer the barrel cocking, or the side lever cocking type. Do your home work and be prepared to spend some bucks if you want a good one. I paid $350.00 for mine and it weighs about 8 or 9 pounds. Looks like a deer rifle!

Do your homework and read MANY reviews on the ones you like the looks of.

I have a Benjamin Trail in .22 @1,100 FPS, a side lever in .177 and a Crossman CO2 in .177. CO2 guns are easy to shoot (no manual cocking) but the cartridges get expensive if you shoot a lot. I would recommend that you go to Pyramidair.com. They have a lot of info and tutorials. Very helpful in picking out your first air gun.

Thanks all! I've spent some time poking around about Gamo's so far but that's about it.

We had pellet guns growing up of course...mine was a sheridan pump. I want to go for a single cocking/break barrel one. Part of this is playing into my prepping plans... smile

I got into airguns a pretty good bit a few years back. Pretty crazy how mush stuff is out there right not. The good thing is that there is a ton of info and resources available.

If you intend to hunt with it theres two main choices. You have springers (which will usually include the piston guns) like what have been mentioned here and then there's what is reffered to as "the dark side". That's PCP airguns. If you go the PCP route you will see some next level airgun technology. It's hard to ignore PCP once you know about it. I took the bait and ended up way deeper into airguns that I imagined when I first started looking.
Springer airguns have come a long way as well. You have people killing hogs and mid sized varmints with those things.

Gatewaytoairguns.com is a really good resource.

I havent really spent any time in the last 5 or 6 years looking at much airgun stuff but my little bit of research has lead me to an air rfile called the Seneca Aspen. That will likely be my purchase when I get back into airguns. It's not cheap but after I learned to look at airguns along the same lines as firearms I opened myself up to a really good experience.

My last air rifle was a used Bejamin Discovery that I modified and tuned. Just slightly less powerful than a 22 short out of a rifle. I was hitting marbles at 25-30 yards and they would explode into clouds of dust. I shot that thing more than anything else I've owned.

Good luck...

That's interesting! Never heard of the PCP

You know if the little magazines are reliable?

Ive never heard of any issues with the mags.

I dont think airguns builds have the same challenges as firearms. In fact it becomes a whole new set problems but the reasons to address them will be similar. For instance most firearm guys want to free float a firearm barrel to improve accuracy but on my disco air rifle I found I needed to add a second barrel band to see an improvement.

Nice lazi. BUT I figure I will just stick with my RWS break barrel. It has served me well since late 1994.
