Are they purely aesthetic as I personally would find it cleaner looking without them and I'd imagine they are a nuisance for a sheath maker but maybe there is a good reason. As for the hump question above, it's a thumb stop for choking up on the blade using the choil. Once you use it, you begin to understand and appreciate it.
