Why did this cause me to want to sing "the wheels on the bus go round and round----oh yea thats what we did with the kids to keep their minds off the trip while I put the hammer dowm. As I told the kids, I am driving as fast as I can... they didn't care either!!! Trust me the trip and windshield time will be worth it

We need a bigger feed bowl. Maybe like those kind with a reservoir that always refills so it never runs dry!

One hopes though that the Dog Father will be more plentiful than the SS4 since the former will be made from SR77.

I just bought a Rat Daddy yesterday. Bring on the Dog Father.

And then I'll introduce them to my FBM LE.

Very interesting..
*requoting from somewhere: something like +10% performance for +200% price.
I wish there was a standardized Objective way to measure All knives.. like a dyno machine.. measures horsepower, quarter mile time, trap speed.
But unlike cars.. i suppose you cannot test knives without destroying them.

Plus there's the subjective stuff that cannot be measured.. warranty, desired characterisics, edge/blade shape.. too much to list really.

But i can't wait too see the tests myself! ..to see how they stack up ..see where the chips fall.

From my perspective SR77 only has one competitor, SR101. INFI is not competition because I cannot afford INFI, except when Dan can scavenge some when Jerry's back is turned.

Anyway, I expect great things from the DogFather and I am very much looking forward to finding out for myself how well it stacks up against the Battle Rat.

Rich,
Exactly! While i'm sure an FBM could chop like no tomorrow.
Realistically.. Dog Father's combination of price point, res-c handle, steel, and warranty will make it the chopper User of choice for Many! It's basically the next Camp Tramp/Battle Rat.
there's tons of (new) cheaper choppers below it.. and couple choppers above it.. but there seems to be a void.. the Dog Father's alone at this level/price.
ONLY thing at this level i can think of is Ontario Rat7 D2 steel @ ~$115-$130.

From what I have heard of the steel there should be no disappointments. I can think back to a summer where I was given the privilege of running a jackhammer all day in the summer in Houston TX. I had wrung my t shirt out 7 times before 8:30 am. The bit was never in question on the hammer. The next day I was a noodle. Impact it can take. I want to know how it takes an edge and hold it. I am looking at this to replace a hatchet, axe, and a saw for moose hunting. I can afford to loose the weight!!!

D2 is good steel. Like all it has its limitations. You could shoot that question over to Bob Dozier about his heat treating on D2. I did see a review someplace where one of his Special Agent knives shattered under a blow.

I also know it takes a bit to put an edge on D2 and it does keep that edge very well.

Fwiw.. i've been noticing Becker BK9's price has gone up to ~$65-$75.. maybe more.
0170-6C carbon steel iirc.. not sure about heat treat, if any.
Something to do with labor/licensing disputes over at Camillus.
So speculators are snatching 'em up!

I think the test results will be interesting from a couple of perspectives. Obviously, they'll be interesting from an engineering perspective. But they could be interesting from a political perspective as well.

Imagine what would happen if SR77 actually turns out to equal or outperform INFI (or SR101) in one or more tests. Would that send a ripple through the Busse community? Would it create a stampede of knife buyers slobbering their way from the trough to the yard? Would allegiances realign? And how would the powers that be react to that if they did?

Nothing will ever be like INFI, it is simply an amazing steel on all levels. With that said, I think the price to performance ratio of the Dog Father will put all non-INFI knives to shame. Remember...its all about performance that us regular guys can afford.

I am just about positive that the D2 blade comments were made by Eric Issacson over at Swamp Rat. As a National Sales Manager, he should have a pretty good idea what he's talking about, getting input from guys like Cliff Stamp and other very knowledgeable folks. You might ask him about D2.

Thanks. At least you tried. I don’t think people understand how difficult these are to make until they try it themselves. My Howler sheath I recently made took me about 3 hours to make I think it was. Have you seen my tutorial? It might help you with the design if you haven’t seen it. The layout is the same, just a smaller knife. Same method though. If I get some spare time, I’d like to make a couple HR sheaths and put them on eBay. I haven’t seen any affordable HR sheath options available yet. My sheath also fits either the HR or the HRLM. I was waiting until I make another one to post pics, because it had been so long since I made one I forgot and skipped a step on mine. One of the edges of the sheath opening I forgot to tape, so it’s just bare cardboard.

Andy,
yes i've seen your tutorial; very informative!
That's how i've been carrying my HRLM! in my pocket with a cardboard sheath!

Swamp Rat store has a Sweet-lookin Buy Brown kydex w/ tek-lock for HRLM for $48 + $9.95 shipping.
https://www.shop.ratknives.com/displayProductDocument.hg?productId=69&categoryId=3

i came *this* close to pullin the trigger.. but tryin to conserve ammo for DF and others..

Yeah, those fancy sheaths are nice, but expensive. I don’t like the high ride of kydex though, I’d prefer leather myself.

they say to investors.. you should not become emotionally attached to the product you're selling. be stone cold.
..or is that to drug dealers?

anyways..

so one time my old man got "attached" to this ugly piece of vacant land he bought for like.. less $ than a '68 Chevy cost brand new.. like 4 digits or something stupid.

a Decade ago some developers offered him $500,000 for it, repeatedly! he turned 'em DOWN!
oh man.. i just about puked.

then the local economy took a downturn.. it just sat for the longest time.

Recently he ended up selling it for a hair under $300,000.
so.. he still scored mind you.. but just had to wait longer.. and got less.

moral of the story..

i'm not sure.. but i don't think i'd make a very good "investor" if it comes to knives..
