I like 440C, too. I would much prefer a good folder to the miniature fixed blades, though. Here is my thinking:

1. The handles will always be large enough for a good grip with any folder with a 3" blade or larger, and the overall length folded will be much shorter than a fixed blade of the same size.
2. Modern folders have improved locks and are strong enough for anything one could reasonably do with a small knife.
3. You can get a quality folder for less than $100.
4. They are very convenient for concealed carry, but are not limited to that. Belt pouches are available for those models too large and heavy for the pocket.

I know that a fixed blade is stronger than a folder, but how much force can I apply with a 3" handle on a 2.5" blade? I'm not saying I'm right and those who want a very small fixed blade are wrong. I'm just stating my own reasons for prefering folders in blades < 4".

That is generally my view on knives with blades less than 4", but I like a little variety.

In 90% - 95% of real world daily carry, if I can carry a knife larger than my 3" SAK, I will carry a 4" bladed folder. Reason - because it slips in most of my pant pockets easily, comfortably and doesn't scare the sheeples. I can access a folder clipped in my pocket and open the blade fast enough. I am not worried about lock failure with the folders I choose.

But, I probably prefer a fixed blade design for most use if given the option. Fixed bladed knife tend to fit and feel better in the hand.

Lately I seem to favor the Swamp Rats in the small to medium sizes.
Yep. I suspect handle size has a lot to do with that.

I would probably agree.

The handles on the HRLM and the Ratmandu are very nice. I like them more than the Res-C handles on the Yard Keeper.

But, I still say that everything I have read and seen indicates that SR101 is better at holding an edge than SR77. So, since SR101 is plenty tough for smaller bladed knives, the edge holding ability starts to weigh in as a more significant factor in the smaller knives and (to me) gives the nod to SR101 over SR77 if given a choice on comparable designs.

I generally agree with everything you said, KnifeGuy. But in reality, I suspect that the difference is more psyhological than it is practical. I mean, can you imagine a survival situation that a Scrap Yard knife in SR-77, properly maintained, would be unequipped to handle?

Both INFI and SR77 seem to be two of the toughest steels I know of. I have mentioned before that I wouldn't be surprised if SR77 is actually tougher.
But, similar to SR101, INFI seems to be able to hold an edge better and is more corrosion resistant. So, assuming INFI is plenty tough enough, the other factors start to give INFI a slight edge over SR77. I would argue that "as a package" INFI has a better combination of characteristics overall.

If we cut to the chase, I believe that the primary reason that people buy INFI is because it's "in" to own INFI, not because they feel they'll ever have to stake their life on INFI's ability to provide "that extra 5% - 10% of toughness, edge holding or corrosion resistance".

I would agree to that to some point, but I would add that many people buy into INFI because it is proven to be a good investment as a collectible.

There is some hype involved. But, I think a lot of people like to be able to say: "I own the INFI - the best steel on earth". To me, this is debatable. As I would argue different steel qualities suited for different types of knives. But, CLEARLY, regardless of type of knife, INFI is an amazing steel.

One other point. At the risk of repeating myself, I still feel that everyone who becomes an afficianado of Busse family knives MUST own at least one INFI knife. No matter how you slice it or dice it, INFI is the holy grail of knife steel in this community. AFAIC, owning an INFI knife is a requirement of membership. That's why I own just ONE INFI knife and why I may never buy another one. It's also about the least practical reason for owning an INFI knife I can imagine.

Interesting that as strongly as you defend SR77 as being just as good as INFI, you still call INFI "the holy grail of knife steel".

I assume you are just saying you feel SR77 does everything you need it to do well enough even if INFI is a little better.

..... I feel similar.

I have had very good luck with Buck's 420HC. For some reason, Buck can make a knife with good sharpness and edge-holding out of 420HC. Must be their heat treat. I skinned 10 squirrels with my old Bucklite, and it would still shave.
