even though the obvious answer is the .454 casull, it wasn't available for voting. the K98 is that new pink remington, right?

Garand is awesome... and you gotta be a real man to do battle with one, a real candidate.. AK ranks high... but too many beachaz use it... and trajectory is a little... Limp. (Heck I love them,... but not manliest, despite rugged design and build and being maintenance free, like myself =)) M16... lol, mouse gun for dorks, nerds, paid off budget committees, and ladies... only good for head shots. It takes more than capacity and $$ to be a manly firearm... (got a few, but simply not manly, and requires way too much primping and prep before a night out on the town) BAR- pretty cool, lots of grunt.. but the best ones are hard to get, and newer ones, while awesome, are light weight compromised hunters.. a little too fragile imo.. K98. Great rifle, but too glossy and not American.. so its out on the manly factor.. 1911. Big time mans gun.. battle proven.. good to go in GI/MilSpec, not in tacticool pretty range spec that will choke on grains of sand. But manliest... a long gun will beat out the pistol every time... Python... sick dirty harry power... but he shot wadcutters and low grain to be more accurate and less powerful... not manly at all. And in battle standards, the modern pistol (glock 20 in 10mm for example) makes this thing look under-gunned every time... 870... Whoa Daddy. MY VOTE!!! I have had every semi mass produced, and most all pumps, and my 870 is my go-to for all. If i can bust 3 clays from 100+' flying away at 35mph+ at the same time... I can sure dang well hit folks while me or them are on the move... The knock down power you need, slugs to destroy at range (and kill those wearing a vest, without even penetrating the vest.. simply pushes ribs into the lungs/heart, etc)... This is the bomb diggidy platform, from simplicity, to tac'ed out brawler entry gun..

I thought 454 too.... Does a REAL man really need a gun except to hunt food for his family?

real men know that guns and an armed populous lead to a polite society, and maintain balance against the threat of tyranny, foreign and domestic. Real men know it is not only their right, but duty to act with courage and valor.

finished the exam.
i still haven't voted. this is one tough question. the garand and 1911 were my first instincts. they're the first options i thought of when i created the thread. python is the rolls royce of six guns, but my mind first went to the 686. 870...it's a pump shotgun, forthcoming and powerful, virtues men should strive for. the m16 and ak had to be on the list for anyone who'd complain if they weren't. lotsa cowards using the ak these days. had to have some support weapon on the list between m60, barrett, bar, bren...the list goes on. same goes for a bolt, coulda gone with the enfield or a modern steyr, but k98's the legend.

My first reaction was Garand, then I saw the 870 and wanted to vote for it, because I have one and that makes me manily. Then I saw the 4th option, and with out much hesatation voted the for Browning Automatic Rifle.

I almost voted 1911, but chose the Garand. The Garand is a MAN'S weapon, in a man's caliber. You can get the 1911 in pretty boy 9mm besides masculine manly .45, so my vote went to the Garand. Could not vote for the BAR, since the average man cannot own it.

(Ok guys you got me.. Given half a chance and less draconian laws I'd be packing a 10mm Glock!)
As has been proven time and time again, disarming the public only disarms the (harmless) law abiding citizen- the criminals by their very nature will ignore the laws and have an easy stress-free life...
Now back on topic= In the poll I voted AK, pure and simple performance in any conditions- not brilliantly accurate but it'll get the job done!

I went with the BAR, but would have chosen the M249 SAW if it had been on the list. If man-portable isn't a requirement, then you gotta love the GAU-8 Avenger.

I voted for the 870. It's outstanding on the bad guys. And after drilling them you can shoot skeet with it. It's like the swiss army knife of firearms.

The Garand and BAR are great rifles BUT the Garand's 8 round box limits its usability and the BAR's fixed barrel set up limits it's use in a sustained fire light machine gun role. I didn't go AK on a whim! <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" />

That historic venerable old Colt pistol is historic and venerable, but a Glock 10mm holds 15 rounds- if my back was against the wall I'd take 15+1 10mm over 7+1 .45ACP!

no glocks. they are disallowed until further notice. besides, you can get the fat stack 1911s that hold just as many rounds, and are not made by glock.

Those are sweet - There was a guy I was at the range with that packed a Para full size double stack and a compact double stack. His compact (which he no longer carries!) failed to feed about every other round - and it was well oiled and maintained, etc. Hopefully that was just a fluke <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif" alt="" /> You will find a hard time convincing me that Glock is anything but a very good combat pistol - granted, I carry a 1911, but Glock makes a great pistol. (I have seen the little rear slide guide clips break off on one though!)

oh, by the by, how good are those XDs? I'll tell ya about those XD's. They were made by a Croatian company called HS Arms, and the pistol was called the HS2000. I kinda liked them for $250 or whatever they were - then Springfield bought them out, stamped their name on them, and doubled the price. You can't possibly knock GLOCK and then try and give props to a whored out croation knock off of the Glock <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" />

right now I'm sort of shopping around in a very slow, roundabout way, for something in .357 sig, because it's a trendy round that's sort of unconventional, and I like the huge variety of rounds available for it. but I don't want to shell out for something like a sig if I'm not going to be all serious about shooting, just doing it recreationally. and I heard something about the XDs being a decent buy, but I stopped paying close attention to firearms a long time ago, so I'm catching up at turtle speed.

If you just shooting for recreation and not self defense shoot 9mm. It's a whole lot cheaper.

The manliest firearm wasn't listed. It is the Browning M2 HB machine gun. Oh, I know, its a bit heavy to carry around. It works best mounted on a main battle tank, the manliest vehicle. Gosh, my memories are flooding back! I just loved to say, "Caliber Fifty"....Kachunk...boom, boom, boom!

I considered the 1911 and the 870 but really it was the K98 no question. Bolt actuions are the most manly of guns and the K98 has the finest bolt action ever. It was used in 2 world wars and is still being produced today. Uber accurate capable of 600metre shots with ease it is the most accurate and long range weapon on the list and therefore the manliest.
The model 29 is far more manly than the 454 which is overcompensating.
The old school BAR is cool and even the new new takedown one is pretty neat. I always thought a .300 BAR would make a decent counter sniper rifle.

If you just shooting for recreation and not self defense shoot 9mm. It's a whole lot cheaper. yeah, but I hate 9mm, so I can't. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused.gif" alt="" />

Manly Man Carlos Hathcock used one as a record setting sniper rifle <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/thumbup.gif" alt="" />

Din - couple ideas...
Glock and Sprinfield XD both have .357 sig. The XD's are great from what I hear, by the way! <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif" alt="" /> I was just being difficult as well!
You can get some models from Sig (and others I'm sure) that you can swap out barrels between .357 Sig and .40. .357 Sig is a 40 case necked down to .357 - so you can use the same Mags, it uses the same extractor setup and everything - and .40 is cheaper to shoot than .357 sig.
That said, I'm w/ Jer that if you're just gonna shoot, the 9mm is great. I got the 9mm instead of the .40 because I can shoot cheap surplus ammo - and lets face it, 9mm is a very good defensive round, even though it gets a bad rap! NYPD still carries it - and they kill people all the time!!
(edit - I just read your post about hating 9mm - oh well!)

Unsub, I think you'll find the SMLE would give a Kar 98 a good run for it's money! I believe the SMLE action is still used on many hunting and sniper rifles to this day..

oh, by the by, how good are those XDs? Well din this is my XD in .45 ACP, when I want to buy the XD in .40 at about the last minute I went for the .45 tactical (5 inch) over the service (4 inch) and oh so glad I did it is 13+1 and shoots like a dream. thousand or so rounds through it and no problems at all it is a big gun too, very manily in my opnion.

Doesn't Chuck Norris use a Beretta 9mm on "Walker..."? I think with the right ammo the 9mm is fine. I like my 92. It holds lots of bullets and I can hit very well with it. The 1911 is, of course, the classic manly pistol. Some women have a hard time pulling the slide back.

Carlos Hathcock would make a sling shot manly. This laser sighted slingshot is pretty cool. Accurate enough to split pencils at 20 feet. And they hit a lot harder with lead balls. You could also fire arrows with a modded slingshot. Then there’s also the Hawaiian Sling.

Now back on topic= In the poll I voted AK, pure and simple performance in any conditions- not brilliantly accurate but it'll get the job done! Well, it is weapon for war not for hunting and shooting range, but it should be made in Izhevsk - otherwise it is cheap copy which does not represent real AK which is accurate enough. Can you imagine what will be M16 made in China? Check also Saiga - it is AK with longer barrel. Hunting AK if you like, not fully automatic, of course, but with same action - same super reliable. Thanks, Vassili.

Some women have a hard time pulling the slide back. this was an intentional engineering decision, since the pistol was designed by men, and men know how men are, and men also know how women will react to men being how men are on occasion.

even though the obvious answer is the .454 casull, it wasn't available for voting. the K98 is that new pink remington, right? Before I got my 500 S&W I would have agreed. I will say the .454 is the most punishing handgun I have ever owned or shot. I can't imaging what a 460 must be like. I still shoot my 44 mag more than any gun but I now consider it light in comparison. I did have the opportunity to shoot a 50 Barrett...what the heck <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/crazy.gif" alt="" /> , nothing is safe <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" /> Dan

A buddy of mine has a 45/70 handgun. Does that count for anything? He still hasn't taken me up on the dare to fire my handloads in it though! <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif" alt="" />
The 45/70 deserves mention. How many 130 year old cartridges are still going that strong? It was the original record holder for extreme distance shooting too!
There is something to be said about lobbing a chunk of lead the weight of an AA battery at almost 2000fps. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif" alt="" /><img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/thumbup.gif" alt="" />

We can't have Hi cap mags so the classic single stack .45 is nice for my smal hands.
The 9mm is an excellent round I think Americans just hate anything metric on principle. 7.62/54 has been around for over a hundred years and is still a viable military round. A Finn Sniper used the Mosin to kill over 500 Soviets single handed(he got another 250 with a subgun). It is also the cheapest centrefire rifle round now that the 7.62/39 has gone up in price so much.
The K98 mauser has the best action of any firearm ever made period. It is the best bolt action ,bolt action is the best type of action game set and match. The Israeli and Spanish version are now available in .308. The Argentine 1909 is one of the finest military(or any) rifles ever made.
A 45/70 is definitly manly but a bit outdated.

nozh2002, just wanted to say that was a great looking 454 Casul, I've still got my field grade one I bought back in 93. Over the years I had a screw shear off that holds the barrel on because I shot the heck out of it and like a dumb head, when I tried to drill the screw out, I drilled just a little bit into the barrel. To make the long story short, I sent it back to freedom arms and they repaired everything free and it was way out of warranty and I sent them drawings and told them what I had did. There service was beyond my expiations and I've been a loyal customer since. My best 2 weapons are my glocks and Casul, the AK's, macs, etc.. are throw aways.
Everything is possible and failure is not an option.

The main reason I like it is I just seem to shoot it better than 45, not that I'm bad with a 45. And having 15 shots in the magazine is nice, too. But if I was in the Army and doing CQB in some urban hell hole, forced to use ball ammo, I'd choose the 1911 or some other 45.

I think there is too much emphasis put on caliber. One who is mentally committed to extreme violence should have a good go at finality regardless of the tool at hand.

I think there is too much emphasis put on caliber. One who is mentally committed to extreme violence should have a good go at finality regardless of the tool at hand. That's true to a certain extent; a .22LR can be just as deadly as anything else on the market, but shot placement becomes very critical as the energy imparted decreases. From what I've read, 9x19mm beat out the .45ACP in U.S. military testing for several reasons. Perhaps the most important is that our European NATO allies were already standardizing on 9mm and we wanted to simplify logistics in preparation for the cold war going hot. Of course, for civilian use that isn't important, but (at least in peacetime) surplus ammo is a lot cheaper to shoot. The factor that was most controversial was force delivery; since Newton's Second Law states that force = mass x acceleration, force is directly proportional to a bullet's mass, but is proportional to its velocity squared. So, lighter, faster bullets hit harder, or that's the theory. Again, from what I've read, not personal experience, the much greater penetration of 9mm FMJ often causes it to go through a person, so much of that force is still in the round as it exits the body. The .45ACP on the other hand, imparts more, if not all, of its force and being a large, heavy round, is especially good at transferring momentum. Most of the newer popular rounds try to bridge the gap by being larger and heavier than the 9mm for increased momentum transfer, but they have higher velocities, flatter trajectories, and better penetration than the .45. .40 S&W and 9mm seem to be the most popular calibers among police departments in my area; my guess is that 9mm's popularity is mostly due to cheaper ammunition.

I admit
I used to consider myself to be fairly manly
I do carry a 9mm pretty much all the time...
hmm..you know something
I do need a hug now and then
AND I at times feel compelled to have a good cry

Nothin' wrong with 9mm - especially if you're a terrible shot and need more rounds <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif" alt="" /> Or your a good shot and don't need a bigger round. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif" alt="" /> And that's a G17. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif" alt="" />

Manly gun. Not so manly holster. This one is worth clicking on to see full size. It is what I love about America distilled into object form. It's patina is beautiful. I love the obscure calibre. It is also around a grand. I don't understand why people(by people I mean Americans who are allowed to buy guns) by 2 new guns when they one of these instead. This manly rifle has the manly name of antitank rifle. It fires an enormous round and is the inspiration for the Barret .50 The Sten is a manly gun [URL=http://www.putfile.com/pic.php?img=5720928] [/URL

A Finn Sniper used the Mosin to kill over 500 Soviets single handed(he got another 250 with a subgun). I found this offensive.
