Well, I got my Yard Guard a few days ago being my first knife ever purchased I creamed my pants when I pulled it from the cardboard sheath. It is so beautiful. I'll be sure to hack up somethine pretty soon with it and wip the smirk from it's face.

Anyhow, the reason I am posting is to find out about carrying options. I have my second blade on the way (gen 2 Howling Rat). I would like to carry them together and have them available and usable but not too cumbersome. I spoke with Chuddy about the piggyback sheath he made. His opinion is that it is very heavy. I intend to backpack and hike and don't want to be weighed down.

So far, the best idea I had was to use a Spec Ops sheath for the YG. It is functional and lightweight... and a lot of people really like em. The problem comes that I have is determining how to carry the HR with it. Is it possible to attach a Kydex to the Spec Ops for a lightweight piggyback? I there such thing as a quality fully Kydex piggyback sheath? Am I overthinking this whole thing and should just get 2 sheaths one for each hip?

If you all have other interesting ideas, feel free to share.

Thanks!

Welcome to the Yard.

There are plenty of gents out there who could make you a quality piggy back setup. I have seen some great looking setups make by folks on this forum.

My personal preference is to carry blades seperately for hiking purposes. I like to carry a 4" type blade on my hip and a larger knife/machete in my pack. The spec-ops nylon works great for me and I usually keep that puppy mounted either on my gear or in my pack. A smaller blade I keep on my hip, usually in Kydex just because I have that available to me and I know that if I ditch my pack, I still have a knife on me.

Here is an example of my daily carry/hiking gear setups. That's a HRLM in kydex.

If I have a vest on, I might use a nylon setup to mount to it like this.

More likely I would keep the larger blade in my pack and just roll out with a smaller knife on my belt and a Victorinox in my pocket of course. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif" alt="" />

Good luck with your choice. I don't think there is a wrong decision here, just personal preference.

Nice rifle J33psr0ck. Looks like a Remington 700 police lefty. Very cool.

Any ways, back on topic...

Kwantum,

You can probably ask a custom knife maker to get you a very nice piggy back in Kydex.

I'm having Rainwalker <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/bowdown.gif" alt="" /> making me a Kydex Sheath for my FBM and having a Piggy RMD. I can't wait.

Rainwalker, Thank you very much for your time. I really can't wait for my sheath. Gonna go crazy with the camera. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif" alt="" />

Oh hello there Sharp. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" /> Now I know who you are. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif" alt="" /> Yep that's gunna be some rig once it's done.

Kwantum,

I'd have to agree with Jeeps on preferences, I usually carry my blades individually, but there's always exceptions to any rule. A good heavy duty leather rig or well made Kydex rig could hold the two knives just fine if that's what you like and want. A sheath could also be made that would allow you to carry them together or separately. It's really just a matter of figuring out what will suit you best. I've got a combo rig in the works that will include the Dog Father, a Yard Guard and a Keeper. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/ooo.gif" alt="" /> I can't wait to see how it turns out. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/cool.gif" alt="" />

Wow, That's gonna be some rig.

I'm guessing your gonna use leather, right?

A kydex sheath like that would look cool.

Yea, that one's going to be leather. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif" alt="" />

Not sure how it'd work with kydex, it's not impossible though. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" />

Rainwalker,

Even in leather, a 3 knife sheath will be very impressive.

Your right about it not being impossible. You just need a long enough main blade (DF). Then do a "tiger stripe" styling when you put the smaller sheaths on the main sheath. It would be interesting.

A cool 3 knife kydex sheath would be one that use the AK-47. You can add a bunch of offset normal kydex sheaths. That would look insane. Of course, the molding of the sheath would be interesting. Your gonna need a lot of flat space along the blade that is on the same plane as the rivets.

But, that would be quite a project!!!

Good luck on the 3 knife leather rig!!!

Glocks are great tools. I love my 1911's, but I have so many hours of training behind my Glocks that I tend to carry those most of the time. They are not great looking, but they run like a bat on crack. My model 23 continued to fire with a broken locking block and no locking block pin. I was not aware this had hapened until the end of the class, but it kept running.

I thought I had read somewhere that someone had reshaped the insert a bit to fit a larger knife.

And yes, it is oiled and sharp, for now. I do need to get some supplies for sharpening as this edge won't hold up for much longer. 600, 1200 grit sandpaper and a mousepad for the Guard, right?
