guess i just have enough thick blades, i'm ready for a change. my saks, moras, and new opinel are thin, and they're very capable. haven't tried with the saks but out of pure curiosity tried batoning the mora and opinel, both were fine. wouldn't use them for that normally, just had to see.
as for thin edges on thick knives, you must have missed my comments about the convexed d-mutt. awesome, to put it shortly. demonic.
I may have missed your commments on the convexed DM - or more likely - forgot I hate forgetting. My grandmother has Althiemer's. It is not pretty and scarry to think my wife might have to put up with me repeating my stupid stories over and over every 15 minutes because I forgot I just told her. I hope not.
But, yes, it sounds like we agree - a good convex profile and sharp edge will cut like crazy even on a thick DM. - although, I don't know that I am too (realistically) interested in a .28" thick 3.5" bladed knife.
But, I don't consider .11" - .15" thick at all!
These are thick (but, still cool for their own unique values in my book):
The Yard Keeper LE - 0.257" thick
Dumpster Mutt .... - 0.27" thick
These are "Reasonable" thickness blades in my book:
SS4 .......... - 0.185"
Howling Rat LM - 0.177"
HR 2nd gen.... - 0.175"
The Bog Dog at 0.14" thick is pretty thin to me., It does have a 4.625" blade, but the full height grind makes it seem very thin.
Blade height, blade "grind" height and edge profile all effect the "feel" of the thickness.
Another thing to consider is that overly thin blade are very hard to baton as the blade edge is so thin is cuts into your baton too much. - not that you would look to baton a 3.5" blade very often... ... But,.....
I still have to say that 0.11" - 0.15" thick would be good (IMO). I could easily argue for 0.125" (1/8th inch) - 0.15"
In any event, I still don't care for overly thin fixed bladed field use knives.
**** Interesting - now that I think about it - I thought Dan might not be able to get SR-77 thinner than .25" thick (??????). The Yard Keeper will now be the only SR-77 blade under .25" thick.
I might be interested in seeing this 3.5" bladed concept knife in some of that D2 to is supposed to be stashed away somewhere by the "tons". (????).
