well, I think the choil is more for choking up right?
if thats the case don't you want it out more for more blade control and not so close in?
I think the choils are good where they are, but if you need one, and how big, is the question.
you normally nail it.
I don't think a choil and talon hole is needed on that knife.
but idk if I would really notice, I'm not as much of a perfectionist and find it hard noticing small details in this area.

i like finger choils. the one on that busse isn't a finger choil. still, the talon hole is a signature feature of busse combat and they need a choil or a guard to put it on a knife.

finger choils aren't really necessary on small knives, either. you only need to choke on big knives.

i actually skipped the yard keeper solely because of the choil.

I hope Dan Busse sees this, goes out to Jerry's scrapyard, finds some good stainless steel 3/16" stock or INFI or D2 and some mudder handles, and makes a few thousand of knifeguy's Nessies. In satin or double cut. I like it better than Jerry's version.

Horned, dangerous, and off my medication.

Hey Pitman....

I know you feel I "Ruined the effect" with my modified versions of Jerry's Nessmuk..... although, I can't possibly see how.

I still feel VERY strongly about the over-sized choils, Talon Holes, and wasted use of what SHOULD be VERY functional and usable blade edge where there are worthless non-functioning choils and Talon Holes.

But, is this more to your liking?:

I think the above version has subtle little improvements to the guard and index finger area over my first version:
[Linked Image from i80.photobucket.com]

Both are WAY better than the original around guard by minimizing the choil, removing the useless Talon Hole (useless on this knife....) and bringing the blade edge and index finger closer together for improved function.

Hopefully, Jerry will listen. But, as I mentioned somewhere before, I doubt he will. He already came back with a second and smaller proto, but still left in the Talon Hole and over-sized choil...

Here is Jerry's first concept:

Here is Jerry's 2nd Proto:
[Linked Image from i80.photobucket.com]

I would of course still dump the Talon Hole, but if for some reason the Talon Hole must stay, here is how I would modify the 2nd Proto:
[Linked Image from i80.photobucket.com]

To me, the 2nd proto is much more of a skinning knife. So, I would leave the curve in the belly as it is. I think this is a very good skinning knife as it is. But, I still think it is better served with improvements to the choil, guard and dropping the Talon Hole.

The larger first one is more of a Camp chore, food prep and task type knife IMO. And I think it is better served with a flatter/shallower belly. IMO....

I did the larger one with a Talon Hole as well... But, I still prefer it without.

Here is 1st proto (larger) with Talon Hole, but with (some of) my suggested modifications:

This is still Best IMO:

Knifeguy is truly the king of photoshop.

I would love to see a very very thin S7/res-c nessie.

S7 would make a great thin flexy knife because it is so tough. Just look at the "to the floor" photo!

A Nessmuk is based on the traditional 6 inch butcher knife that was used for decades as the most common belt knife. The green river knife is probably the most famous. I have a real Weck and Mueller 8 inch model that takes a wicked edge really easy but gets dull very quick.

An S7 flexy nessmuk would make a fantastic companion knife to a DF. As it is if you want a companion knife the only Scrappers that come close are the SS4 and the YKCG. It also says something that the most sought after knives are the skinny ones.
