Gorgeous Blade! If they re-released it I'd have to get one, but I haven't seen any in the secondary market for prices that seemed reasonable enough to me. Very tempted by the camp tramp too(yet distracted by so much talk of a scrap tramp).

Just a question about how do you know when new Scrapyard knives will be coming out? Is it posted on this website?

I just missed the Dumpster Mutt DC and I don't want to miss the next new knife.

Thanks.

If you are deployed and you need a DMDC you can have one of mine at cost. They don't come with sheaths. I do live close to Leatherface if you want him to make you one. He does leather and kydex. I'll probably be taking some blades over there soon anyway.

Everybody seems to be hoping for either a 7"-8" chopper or a skeletonized EDC blade next. I have no idea if that actually influences Dan's decisions though, but he always pulls it off and gives us a great new blade.

darkaether- Thank you very much for the generous offer and I do appreciate it, but my deployment here in Iraq is almost over. I will be flying back to the states in 2 1/2 weeks, and I will go to the Bladeshow in Atlanta and I hope to find one there. I know they are sweet knives and I hate to take one away from you because they are hard to get.

Andy Wayne,

I agree. A good knife should be able to be batonned, but there are limits. Take a look at the size of the frozen log that these guys were trying to baton with that little CS Recon scout (7 1/2" blade)

[Linked Image from img.photobucket.com]

Now, compare that to the log that you batonned with your 10" blade.

[Linked Image from i6.photobucket.com]

You can see that there is a huge difference between what was being asked of those respective knives. You were able to split a log that was relatively small compared to the size knife you had, while the CS Recon was asked to split a log that was significantly larger. Not exactly a fair comparison.

Like I said earlier, the CS recon that failed could have been a lemon too. Who knows if there as a hairline fracture in the metal previously to that incident. also notice that it wasn't the blade that broke.

It's like a hunt, alright. But when I go hunting, I know in advance when the hunting season starts and ends! LOL

BLD522/Rainwalker,

Thanks for the warm welcome and your valuable insight!

Maverick

actually maverick, dan gives a 1 hour time period of when the knife will be released (along with other notices/hints throughought the week/days before) so you do know Exactly when the knife will release.

as far as the cs recon scout goes, I'm sure it's a good solid knife, but andywayne could probably chop it in half with his mastiff! lol

they were only splitting a small piece of that log and thats not a rare break, for heavy batoning on even good sturdy knives.
but a scrapyard/swamprat/busse could've split that log in half with a big enough baton.

you must get one dude!
I'm sure you'll be impressed.

welcome to the forums!

Yeah, that was a small one. As I said, I’ve done it hundreds of times with very large frozen logs, that’s just the only pic I had of a decent sized one. Most of the time it was at my Aunt’s house in the winter at night, so I don’t have any pics I took of very large frozen logs. Some logs were actually longer than the entire blade length, and the log got too thick as I split down it, and I had to beat on the handle to get it out because there was less than an inch of the tip to beat on. Most of the time I was splitting full size knotty frozen hardwood logs right down the middle with the handle lower than the tip and only 2” or so of the tip to beat on. I’ve read that splitting down the middle is harder on it than splitting off the edge like the RS pic above. I tried to break it against wood and couldn’t. I read that there wasn’t anything you could do to a Rat (short of a long lever) against wood to break it, I wanted to find out. I couldn’t hurt it.

That RS isn’t the only one I’ve heard of that broke either. I’ve heard of several Kukri’s breaking too. You might never have a problem with one, but then again, it might fail on you when you need it most. I’ve NEVER seen a Busse family knife break that wasn’t SEVEARLY abused. (Like beat on with a pipe wrench for 8 hours) Also, the CS warranty sucks.

Here’s some of my CS fixed blades I had:
[Linked Image from i6.photobucket.com]

I’ve since sold all my CS fixed blades. If they don’t trust their product enough to stand behind it, why should I? And if I broke a CS, I’d be screwed and out the money. Break a Rat or Dog, and it’s covered, so no worries about using it hard. I still like and own CS folders and their more unusual products, but when it comes to fixed blades, I want something made by someone named Busse. Their knives do things knives aren’t supposed to be able to do.

Well, for the record, I never said that Cold STeel knives were the best knives you could get. I said that I thought they represented good value for what you pay for them. Sure, if I wanted to fork over $300-$400 bucks, I could get a Busse Combat knife that could cut through a tank. But honestly, I would rather buy 4 Cold Steel Trailmasters for that kind of money. If one breaks, I got plenty of replacements.

Also, Cold Steel doesn't make knives. They simply design them and market them. Cold Steel knives (at least the carbon v's) used to be made by Camillus which had a long and solid reputation for making decent knives. In fact, the Becker line of knives was also made by Camillus and Becker was a great line of knives and even today, are highly sought after in the secondary market. The Beckers were made from the same steel as the Cold Steel Carbon V's. With the exception of the becker brute, I have the whole line of Beckers in my collection so I know a little bit about them. Again, not the best knives you can get, but very solid and an outstanding value for what I paid.

I'm not here to promote Cold Steel or defend their policies. In my mind, the Scrapyard knives are a definite step up from Cold Steel and they're not outrageously priced -- and that, folks, is why I'm here.

I'd rather have 1 Busse because I probably wouldn't be carrying a spare if my lesser blade failed. What good is an extra cheap blade when you don't have it on you and your primary fails in the field?

I understand most of the time you won't have to truely depend on your gear, but someday we might all be tested and when that day comes I'll have the best gear I can afford, a well conditioned body, and hopefully skills and knowledge exceeding them.
