I'm guessing that the hardness of the porcelain combined with the impact of the ring caused the chip. Since tungsten is so hard, but brittle, the harder porcelain might chip the tungsten upon impact. That's just what I think.

I am sorry to hear about what happened though. I hope all goes well for getting a replacement!

Sorry to hear about the ring accident Vance. Porcelain is very hard, harder than steel. It will can easily roll or chip the edge of a knife blade if impacted with any significant force.

Tell your jeweler you want a Rockwell hardness of 58 and all will be well. It will roll and not chip next time you drop it and you can just steel it out <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif" alt="" />

Seriously, I hope the jeweler takes care of you like they should.

OK..... so all that above.....

Tungsten is EXTREMELY hard, but brittle. It is used for machining bits and such and the bit edges will chip out over time.

Hard is probably a more appropriate word than "Tough". But, it should be tough enough that it should NOT chip just from being dropped. At least not a ring. I would "Assume" the jeweler who sold it should make ammends. If not, I would NOT be happy.

As Kraz said, "porcelain is very hard, harder than steel" and can destroy many knives. Destroying toilets is best left to the mass of a sledge - not the fine edge of softer steel.

But, just the weight of a ring being dropped on a porcelain commode should NOT break your ring.

I have a gold ring and talked a buddy into getting Tungsten. His looks nice. I have considered replacing mine some day. But, I never have any spare money anymore thanks to my addiction / hobby.

Anyway.... What I can't figure out is how you dropped your ring while taking a whiz... I don't really want to know, but ???????????

.

I had the same thing happen to my ring, and it was made of the same tungsten-carbide. The store we bought it from did get me a new one, after a lot of basically saying I must have done something to it since it is indestructible first. Needless to say I will never buy anything from them again.

Hmmmmm....that perfect "cut" is suspicious.

Fess up, Vance.

It appears you ran out of test mediums for your blades and decided to perform a little "abuse test" of your own.

I bet the knife's edge was completly unharmed, correct?

I'm full of good ideas.
Hey that could be the next product from Jerry.
People would be backhanding and distroying cinderblocks with them in weeks.
