I just drove all the way to the gym and "24 Hour Fitness" is closed til Sunday.... Slackers.

We aren't going to have any bad weather for at least 24 hours. And north Houston isn't New Orleans. I am about 90 miles from the coast. (near Dan's old stompin grounds).

Sure, it looks like the [censored] thing is headed right at us now. But, so. Some wind, some rain, some limbs likely blown around and maybe some trees down.
Electricity might go out (????) ... It is not the end of the world.... and there shouldn't be any concerns till tomorrow night at earliest.

Yes, it is prudent to have a few days worth of non-perishable food and water.... Why don't people have this anyway????

I can appreciate evacuating coastal areas, low flood prone areas, old-folks homes and such. But, the rest is just hysteria - created by sensationalist media and hyper-sensitive people (canaries) these days.

Canary in a Coal Mine

I am not trying to make terribly light of the potential severity of Ike or any other hurrican. I understand they can cause devestation. But, I just have to believe there are very few significant issues likely to occur in my neck of the woods.

It was a pretty nice sunny evening. Walked the dogs, but then wasted a trip to the gym.

Luckily, we have gas in the cars. Gas stations are going dry. My sister-in-law tried around 5:00 - 6:00 p.m. and had to try 8 gas stations.

My wife had to go by the store today (around 1:00 as businesses were closing work early ) to get some cream cheese (cheesecake for a buddies B-day) and O.J. - Apparently, the shelves got wiped clean and the lines were horrible.

I don't have a generator and it is still in the 90's here in Houston. So, no A/C WILL suck if electricity goes out. But, if electricity goes out..... the rest is like camping....just hot sweaty camping here in Houston.

I hear your frustration...Up here in San Antonio (Lackland AFB) all I have seen is email after email about how to prepare...you can't really, you can just do your best...yesterday bottled water was sold out, today (because it looks like it will miss us) nobody is worried anymore. MREs Batterys Water...this isn't my first dance...just like a [censored] snake, these storms will strike just when you think your clear...good luck

Welcome to the wonderful world of hurricanes. Looks like a big one, KG. Take care. Get the Coleman and the choppers ready. Maybe some water. Are any Katrina looters still in Houston? Lock and load. Good luck.

Or Austin. My brother used to come up a couple times a year. It was a good excuse to get together and visit

There are a whole lot of Katrina refugees that relocated to Houston. Some decent people I have met. Some questionable that I hear about.
I leave in a somewhat decent area. But, I am not sure what decent is anymore. Some of my neighbors I know and trust. But, there are still plenty not so trustworthy looking people around.

Not my first dance either. I grew up in Houston. Lived through Alicia with a tornado spawn that ripped our street to shreds back in 83'. Took about 2-3 days just to chainsaw the trees enough out of the street to get vehicles in and out. I remember cutting lots of wood and sweating at night a lot.

This should be a picnic.

Hurricanes aside, I miss Austin for other reasons. Nice place to live.

Hey KG, I'm rollin' down towards Houston right now to look after some family assets. If you wind up in trouble or needing a helping hand with something, let me know. I'll PM you my cell number if you need it. Four of us are headed that way in a big lifted 4X4 1-ton dually Chevy. It says J-T Security Contractors across the back window and is dark blue in color. We are pulling a white 31' race car trailer that's full of supplies. We're gonna hole up in Huntsville tonight, and then move on down into the Magnolia and Tomball areas. After that we'll shoot over to just south of Humble. I'm serious man, if you need some help, we'll do what we can. We have wireless access for most of the trip I think.
