Bad news men. My CW failed badly today Well it happened, I snapped a fare chunk of tip off my Chopweiler . I was showing the boy how to start a fire using a flat piece of timber(Redgum). Dig it out etc, you know the technique. Well the last dig & pop, I couldn't believe it Still cant find the tip, but my kids are searching hard. There's $20 in it for the one that finds it. ha ha ha turned a negative into a positive, fun day over all. This is the tip killer, innocent looking isn't it. ![[Linked Image from i17.photobucket.com]](http://i17.photobucket.com/albums/b80/Tez308/CWTipFail-3.jpg) ![[Linked Image from i17.photobucket.com]](http://i17.photobucket.com/albums/b80/Tez308/CWTipFail-1.jpg) ![[Linked Image from i17.photobucket.com]](http://i17.photobucket.com/albums/b80/Tez308/CWTipFail-2.jpg) ![[Linked Image from i17.photobucket.com]](http://i17.photobucket.com/albums/b80/Tez308/CWTipFail-5.jpg) The batoning still needed to be done. This is where the CW excels! ![[Linked Image from i17.photobucket.com]](http://i17.photobucket.com/albums/b80/Tez308/CWTipFail-6.jpg) It's a sad day

That's nothing! It'll sharpen right out!
Can you explain more clearly how it happened? But glad it didn't stop you from finishing the job.

Wow! You sure one of your pups didn't drop it? Haha kidding...gotta say I feel you on this one. Like you said though, you had some batoning left to do and at least it got the job done!

Tezza, you sure surprised me!! I didn't think ANYTHING could harm the point of a Chopweiler short of putting it in a vice and beating on it with a hammer! Sorry to hear of the problem, but follow Bruce's instruction about contacting Swamp Rat and they will make it right. Are you sure that wood wasn't PETRIFIED ?!!!??

After playing with my Scrap Yards & Swamp Rat. I just get the feeling that SY steel has more flex & IMHO is a better steel! If you look at the piece of wood I was digging into. It's not a large piece, so the weight is not that great, & I was not holding it down with any great force. I would understand if it was viced down on a bench, but not this way, kneeling down on the grass. No petrified wood mate, 2" thick REDGUM. Australia has some of the hardiest timbers in the world. Redgum is our premium fire timber, as it just burns & burns. But at the end of the day, it's still wood. Tell me something. How does the SR warranty work? Why would SR want a broken tipped knife back. And I take it SR pay ALL shipping charges from Australia for the broken knife. How about the new knife, who pays shipping on that?

That seems really odd to me, wow, I would think that is a total fluke. Glad Eric is there to make it right, I wouldn't let that shy you off from beating your new chopweiller when you get it bud, chances are that won't happen again.

Glad Eric is there to make it right, I wouldn't let that shy you off from beating your new chopweiller when you get it bud, chances are that won't happen again. I don't think it was a fluke some how? And maybe I don't know my own strength, who knows. But if I do end up getting another CW, I can tell you, it will be sold as quick as I can find a buyer. It will be replaced with either a SOD or a NMSFNO. My son is getting the SOD, so the NMSFNO would gel. It was the same deal with rifles for me. One mishap/fail/jam etc & I'm out, but that's just me. Plus I rely on my knives to survive at times, so I just cannot have steel that wont cut the mustard. I'm sorry fellas, I know plenty here love their SR's, but that the way I feel. But considering this is a Scrap Yard forum there is nothing to worry about. I loves my SY's!, they are superb knives. I should also point out, that I popped a deers hip & jaw with my YKLE. And I can tell you their was much more force involved, & you guessed it, all sweet no tip failure. Seriously man, Scrap Yard steel is something special. I know it's the cheaper version of the three, but some how I believe cheaper is not inferior, especially in Scrap Yards case. So I'll be sticking with Scrap Yards & Busse knives from now on!

Ouch! The Chopweiler is about the last kife I would have worried about breaking a tip off of. But it is covered under warranty. My guess is that the harder tempered part of the blade extended through the point and that part is a bit brittle compared to the rest of the blade. Sorry to see it broke. As one who has occasionally broken tips doing similar stuff, I know the feeling. I really like the Chopweilers and Ratwielers, but I bet the through-tempered SOD and Sarsquatches are tougher. I have seen 1095 blades snap like that.
Horned, dangerous, and off my medication.
