Hi, I've been wondering for a while what are people doing with their knives. And I decided to ask you. What do you use your knives for?

For example, I use mine for cutting things (of course, this is the main purpose of a knife). And I also use my knives at home for food preparation, cutting bones (by hammering into the spine), eating and other kitchen stuff like this. I also use some of the toughest knives for throwing in the yard. Throwing is... you know... is very good entertainment and a good way of relaxing; I feel it even much attracting than going to a poligon and shoot with a gun, because I can do it in my own yard whenever I want to and it comes more natural, easy and it requires no aditional expenses (other than the knife itself and a piece of wood); it also allows me to use my entire energy in a throw, so It's very exciting. When I go on a trip, expedition or training session, I usually keep my backpack as light as possible. Sometimes I carry a lightweight saw (like the sawvivor) together with one or two knives, othertimes I just carry a small pack weighting less than 3Kg so that I can run, climb, swim or do any other stuff with it on my back with minimal energy consumption (it contains about anything I need there, not only the knife and it needs to be as light as possible). In this case, with the only knife I have on me, I do a lot of things: digging into the ground (hole for fire making, digging for groves or for other purposes), starting the fire with firesteel (only when the lighter doesn't work), chopping, spliting wood for fire, defending from animals and, of course, cutting and food preparation. Sometimes I also break things with the tip by hitting the back of the handle with a baton or with a rock and sometimes I use the knife for carving and wood modeling, depending on my needs.

I use them to open the boxes that the next one comes in. Seriously, I seldom use most of them. I tend to use a few favorites and leave the rest stored away or on display. Mostly, I use my folders and machetes. The folders are for everyday cutting tasks, and the machetes are for keeping my little jungle in check. If I use a chopper, it is usually the DFLE, BRKT Golok, or FFBM.

Horned, dangerous, and off my medication.

For me I use them when I go camping, this addiction started out as the quest for the perfect camp knife and it turned into a serious illness. That said I do use them for camping, also I like to pull them out of the safe and play armchair comando while watching reruns of Rambo and Survivorman

thanks Tom, it is funny but true, that is one thing I can't get the wife to appreciate. We are all little kids at heart and these are just our toys, the only difference is they are sharper than the plastic ones we had when we were kids and they cost a little bit more

So true! I'm lucky , as that my wife collects plastic Breyer horses and understands my need for steel. I don't complain when she gets a new horse, and she doesn't complain if I get a new blade, as long as neither of us overdoes it. We get along VERY well!!!

camping, skinning, cutting/chopping random things.

my favorite is when my GF brings home some coconuts for me to cut open. She like those alot, and I cut them almost twice a month for her.

I am just newly addicted and just sit and handle them. I am deciding on which ones to beat on and which to put away. I am also looking at sharpening methods and which is the best way to go with that ( How about a suggestion Dan ? )Basicaly this is a great outlet from a hectic business and a safe investment in my opinion. The really fun part is watching my wife and daughters faces when I buy yet another knife !! They think I am really strange and then they take my credit card and go shopping !! Go figure that one-Thanks

Hah! This is so true! My girlfriend doesn't understand my steel addiction, but I don't understand her purse addiction. I figure, if she can afford an expensive purse she likes (we're talking multiple Yard knives cost), then she should get it. Granted she's done with college and makes a lot more money than me, but that is why I buy mostly Scrap Yard knives, a few Swamp Rats, and Rangers, not Busses. Oh well. At least she tolerates them!

As far as uses, before I found the Yard, I used a Cold Steel SRK the most. Mostly, I split firewood with it to make kindling. This was before my parents had their fireplace ripped out and replaced with a pellet stove. I miss those days of beating on the spine of my knife to make kindling. What I really need to do is more camping so I can use my knives more!
