I would like to go out an a trail this weekend, but I would also like to test some equipment, knives and general stuff that requires me to make a fire. Does anyone here know where in western New Jersey or Estern Pennsylvania one can go hiking and make a fire without breaking the law?
Advice would be appreciated.
Thanks, Gideon

I know we should never break the law but if you are well off the trail where nobody can see you, as long as you make sure it is well out again before you leave, what's it matter ?

Pit, I kinda know where Gideon is coming from. You want to practice your skill set, but don't want to break the law doing it. Here, we can't even practice fire making in our own backyards. Our city council has decided to go "environmental" and instituted a city bylaw banning open fires within city limits. Even fires in firepits are banned. Before the last election, they were talking about banning wood burning stoves, and also about banning people from having fires in fireplaces "inside your own house" but the uproar over that was so great that they had to back off from it. Right now, if you get caught with an open fire of any kind in city limits, it's a $500.00 fine.
I like your idea though about finding a nice secluded spot where you can't be observed, to make your fire.

I live in the NW ( Oregon Coast) and we have outdoor fires on a regualr basis. This is a " tradition" - where family and friends meet around a fire and have a great time.Practicing our surviavl skills is done on a regular basis as this is something one wants to stay on top of in my opinion. I guess I just can't see what you are hurting. I sure wouldn't want to break any laws- but this is just too much. I certainly hope you find a good spot and can enjoy-best of luck-Thanks

Yes, it's kinda sad that we are "governed" into the ground, but on the other hand, the wildfires in California are caused by lotsa folk that either don't know what they are doing, or simply don't care. So, again, all of us end up paying for some people's stupidity.
I really need to make only a small fire to practice with different techniques, and I thought I'd take along some marshmallows for my daughter to toast. That will make it more of a picnic for her as well. But again, I don't want it to turn into a $500 picnic because some ranger gets irritated with me. Its really frustrating, because I can't find anything on the internet. Perhaps a secluded spot isn't such a bad idea.
Regards, Gideon

I have to agree with you on this point. It is absolutely ridiculous. The official reason is that the smoke in the atmosphere is damaging to those with asthma.... give me a break... I have friends who have asthma, so could understand it, if..... IFwe didn't have a PULP MILL within the city limits!!!! When that gets going and we have a good inversion layer, it's hard for people with healthy lungs to breath let alone those with lung problems! Gideon, I apologize for hijacking this thread with a rant. Enough said on that topic. I hope you find a good place. Moderators, if I've overstepped the rules, I apologize.

Moderators, if I've overstepped the rules, I apologize. No problem, I totally agree. I sometimes wish we could roll back the clock by 50 years. All these laws drive me nuts. Anyway, happy Thanksgiving!

Gideon,
How did the fire making go?
Cheers Unfortunately my daughter got cold symptoms on Thursday and had not improved enough over the weekend for me to take her out. I'm in the Caribbean this week and next on business, but I will definitely go out later this month. I will report back

Believe it or not our last set of wildfires was caused by the sparks of rounds hitting plates from a target shooter in a national park. I figure, job security for all them firefighters no? So long as no one gets hurt anyway.
