I received this in a trade and I'm pleased with it. It's my first knife to own from Busse / SR / SY. It's the mudpuppy model.

I find the handle very comfortable and the knife balances in my hand well. The blade shape is a nice general purpose shape, good for EDC or the outdoors.

I haven't used it for much other than some minor food prep and some wood carving. I've spent most my time fixing the edge on it. For some reason this little knife came really thick, thicker at the edge than my axe or kuhkuri. I was curious if anyone more knowledgeable about this knife and it's intended application could tell me why it's so thick at the edge from factory.

Regardless, I hogged off some steel with my X Course DMT stone, then convexed the edge with 600 grit sandpaper, ran it over some 1200 grit for a minute or two, then applied a microbevel with a fine ceramic hone. It will whittle individual pieces of hair now, and carves wood very well, much like an Opinel or Mora with how well it bites into the wood and penetrates, pulling off long, thin curls with ease.

I recently acquired a Spyderco Aqua Salt and it's a close call as to which will be my go to fixed blade for the woods or EDC. For around town the Scrapyard is nice because the shorter length carries more easily, but the extra blade length and rust proof nature of H1 makes the Spyderco a great choice for the woods.

Here's some photos of the edge I put on my knife. It's uneven because on knives I intend to use roughly and less carefully I keep the tips thicker. There are also lots of scratches still visible. I typically don't polish my blades because that polish comes off as soon as I sharpen, so I kind of rushed it. Oh well, it cuts well now and that's all I needed.

Sorry the image is so dark...I'm better with sharpening stones than I am cameras. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif" alt="" />

Welcome Vivi! Nice blade, I wouldn't mind scoring one of those myself. As for the sharpening-looks good! Honestly, I don't have much experience on the subject but I know several of the Dawgs will probably chime in with some useful knowledge.

Thanks for the tip, but it came with a nice kydex with teklok. It's my first time using a kydex sheath and already I'm quite a fan.

Welcome Viv <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/thumbup.gif" alt="" />i- the MPLE seems to hold an edge very well. I had a bit of a time getting it where I wanted it- but once I had it wicked sharp- it is awesome. Is the only 154 steel I have so do not know if normal or not ? I am quite sure fellow Dawgs know more than I do. I didn't care for the grips at first- but now absolutely love it. Jeff is currently making pants for mine and the puppy seems to be almost issue here on the yard. You will find great folks here on the yard-Enjoy <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" />

Congrats and Welcome! That looks like a great little Scrapper. I've been out of the knife buying game for a while, but I may have to track one of those down!

Welcome to the Yard Vivi <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" />

nice score for your first SYK. why so thick? my best guess is it's a SY thing, for toughness and strength.
for more info for the MP here's a link to the thread when it was first described to us;
http://www.scrapyardknives.com/ubbthread...part=1&vc=1

for the edge/grind possibly it's the best and fastest way they have found that is easiest to maintain
and cost effective.

you can read the pages and maybe get some more answers.
welcome again and many more!

Welcome and nice job on that edge! The stock MP edges were pretty bad, here was mines.

Fat edges are okay since it can be taken down, but burrs and rough grind marks are unacceptable in my opinion.

I think the team realized that because the edges on the SOD were nice.

Vivi - Howdy and Welcome to the ScrapYard! <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/thumbup.gif" alt="" /> The MudPuppy is a great little knife, it just needed a little "love" on the edge. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif" alt="" />

Welcome to the Yard. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" />
This is a great place and you'll find a lot of good people here.
Lots of smarts too when it comes to knives. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/thumbup.gif" alt="" />
The more I see of the Mud Puppy, the more I regret not getting one.
I've gotten a couple of DMDC's and a SOD from the Yard so far, and
I love them. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/thumbup.gif" alt="" />

This is a very good group of people here who have a lot of knowledge
about knives, as well as other things (Check the Outdoor Forum), so
join in, have fun, and post lots! <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif" alt="" />

Cheers <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" />
