maybe i think too much.i definitely drink to much but i got to wondering.
with the technology of our time and production methods today's knives have to be the best in the history of mankind particularly regarding toughness assuming we're talking higher end knives here and not chines 420 stainless junk or even mid level stuff like gerber or buck.
now is it a question that pound for pound busse kin knives are the toughest knives made by any company in the world, particularly Busse with INFI and Scrapyard with SR77?? i dont have any experience with CPM-3V but hear its pretty tough.
so if todays knives are the best ever and busse kin are the toughest of our time...{up for debate}... does that officially mean that busse kin knives are the toughest knives ever made in the history of man kind???
i admit that i dont know much about ancient cutlery history and really anything regarding cutlery history beyond WW2.i'm sure maybe some of the knives made samurai style may have been technically tougher with their layering,i really dont know but think it could be possible and is a pretty cool thought.
they've got to be up their towards the top at least.i would think a .320 ASH-1 or FFFBM made of INFI could hold its own respectively along with a .285 CGDM of SR77 and while i like swamprat better than scrapyard or busse i dont think that SR101 {52100} has that reputation for extreme toughness comparatively speaking.

The more this change the more they stay the same. In every age there were renowned smiths with a gift. These smiths new how to bring out the best in the metal with the available technology. In our age this happens to be Jerry Busse. He has the gift of bringing out the best in the metal based on current technology. It's probably safe to say that as things stand now the metals produced are of a finer and more consistent quality then anything previously available in known history. Couple this with Jerry's gift and yes I will argue that Jerry's knives are indeed the best all around knives that have ever been produced.

Good thought northern1. In short, YES, i think Scrap Yard and Busse are the 2 toughest knife companies in the world. As for cpm 3v, i have never seen any test that match ones run on sr77 and infi. I would throw sr77 or infi up against ANY steel in the world in a knife and feel confident that they would stand up to whatever steel that was. It feels great to know that when I hold my beloved S6 and SOD, that i am holding 2 of the toughest knives in the world.

toughness is defined as the total area under the stress over strain curve from zreo to rupture. With stress in units of force/area(y-axis) over, strain in units of lenght/change in lenght)(technicly unit-less)(x-axis) ![[Linked Image from upload.wikimedia.org]](http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/0/00/Stress_v_strain_A36_2.png) In this pic/graph that I (shamelessly) stole from wikipeida, we see point 2 the point where it goes from elastic deformation(non-perment) to plastic deformation (perment). In reigon 4 is the work hardening phase there the material gets stronger (it can take more force/energy with less deformation) untill point 1 where reaches its max strenght or ultimate strenght, after in drops slightly until point 3 where it finally fails .

Oh yah to answer the original question, yes Busse kin are the strongest knives lb for lb, and Scrapyard is king in strenght for your dollar.

I will argue that Jerry's knives are indeed the best all around knives that have ever been produced. Don't tell anybody, but these folks might want to argue that point. And according to Mike Stewart, they may be right. I've seen there site before. Not to impressed looks like a lot of hype and little to actually back it up. The "knife testing video" doesn't really show a lot. It shows RC hardness WOW and some modified machine for cutting rope again WOW . No lateral test, no stress testing the blade or impact stressing the edge nothing. No large knives just small ones. They have all the ear marks of an over priced urban designer knife Send one to Noss......

I will however, so far the emphasis seems to be all on edge retention and nothing else. I just went through a long thread at BF on the subject and again the subject was edge retention. Still no mention of of the rest of the knife being tested. I'm suspicious due to the lack of info. Awards are really meaningless but they look good. I have also become very skeptical of magazine articles. Given how great it's suppose to be I would expect it to be quite popular. Doesn't seem to be though.
Anyway like I said I believe that Busse's are the best "all around" knife meaning that they perform across the board in strength, edge retention and toughness and not just in one area.
Give one to Noss and lets see how it stacks up.....
My guess is not very well in the "overall" category.

My guess is that they'd fare far better than you think they would. Perhaps but only in edge retention since that seems to be there main focus. Keep in mind that DiamondBack doesn't make a chopper, so they might not survive against a 3 pound sledgehammer quite as well as a FFBM does.
My point exactly

yes the prices of a diamondback are up there for sure. I wonder how much a blade made from 1090 with some Osmium added to it, I'm sure it would be incredibly super and unbelievably strong, yet the price would be way over the top, which brings us back to here, although I'm a rat lover at heart, Dan's price per performance is at the top.
