i keep a pretty extensive BOB and PSK in my trunk.i actually have 2 setups, one for winter and one for summer.

the weather and elements during the winter here would leave you dead if you where on your own and and didnt have the right gear.winter survival especially if your trudging through and/or working in deep snow with heavy clothing on will really burn a whole lot of calories quick and if i had to guess i'd say maybe even twice as quick.

so with that said i've been thinking about survival food for my BOB with the most important factors being high in calories, doesnt need to be cooked and lightweight and not too bulky.

so far all i can come up with is powerbars, nuts and jerky.i know all those are real high in protein but they dont seem to be too high in calories which i feel is more important than protein and vitamins if one where to be stranded and have to travel a good distance.

i've run out of calories on long hikes and had an almost hypoglycemic episode and it was scarry because i could barely walk and was miles from the car.luckily i had a few granola bars and some juice and eventually got my strength back after resting for awhile.

so any ideas dogs,ruff.

Gorp.. huh? What's that?

As for stuff high in calories; up here in Canada, the military has these little pouches of high calorie food called LMCs (Light Meal Combat). They're pretty much these vacuum sealed pouches of high calorie candy, fruit, and so on.

Dried papaya, mango, and banana, chocolate bars, pop tarts, nuts, juice crystals with little pouches to throw them in and add some water in to make a sweet drink, freeze dried cheese (Yeah, it's as gross as it sounds!), jerky, and so on. They're designed to give soldiers a high calorie boost while doing winter exercises.

Trust me, marching around all week with a pair of snow shoes and a ruck sack on your back burns a lot of calories.

Check out Survival Boat Rations. They are designed to be nutritionally balanced, and digestible with minimal need for extra water. They come shrink wrapped in foil, and last for years.

I’ve got a bunch of Mainstay meals in my emergency kits. But they are packed in blocks designed to give you a daily ration. Since that ration is spread over several meals, you need some baggies or something to carry the uneaten portions.

If I were restocking, I’d go with the S.O.S. Food Lab U.S. Coast Guard Approved Survival Rations. The advantage is that they come in single meal sized packets.

Gorp is a mixture of peanuts, raisins and M&M's. A lot of backpacker's will have a good breakfast, hike all day snacking on "gorp" and have a good evening meal when they camp.

I wouldn't recommend a steady diet of the following but for what this post is asking they work:

Clif bars are the best tasting protein bars that I've tasted, especially the oatmeal walnut raisin.

I hate to say it but WalMart/SAMS Club has some of the best "gorp" (have to remember that) I've had, and it comes in BIG bags, few different flavor combos.
+1 on the Pop Tarts - lots of calories and they're fortified. Don't forget Granola though that tends to get stale too quickly (recently opened a box of Quacker 100% Natural - 100% yuck).

I think there are Coast Guard approved bars with 1200 or 3600 calories with a 5 year shelf life. I just started doing research on these, for my own kit, so don't quote me on specifics.
