very sorry to hear this. i have a friend in chicago who spent his holidays in the hospital diagnosed with stage 3 lymphoma. he went just 2 day before thanksgiving and didn't get out until early january. he seems to recovering well and even thought he is still getting treatment he's progress is positive.
i know it may seem hard but staying positive is the best approach.

If you can do this quietly (better to get it lined up before saying anything) - find out what her daughters "dream" is..travel to Disney World....meet Hanna Montana....whatever....
then contact the closest chapter of "make-a-wish foundation" and tell them the prognosis.... they make things happen, and might be able to bring some great smiling memories for both of them...they did for our family 20 years ago...
