Well I might just be wrong about the toughness of the ML, pitman. It would not be the first time now would it? As I have never used one, I was just thinking that it was similar to most commercial knives. More good knives is always a good thing and I don't mind being wrong about it all. I'll take your word for its toughness. It is a thing of beauty, for sure.

true pit, but as far as TOUGHNESS goes, I would think the scrapper is tougher, but I would also think (in the same thickness and grind thickness etc) that the scrapper would get more edge deformation.

The ML probably has a lot more STRENGTH...
I'm just guessing though. (and going by some personal experience)

BTW vic, if the barkie broke because of it's design, could it be that mike is re-designing it to be tougher?

I've heard of him doing similar things before...
though I'm not trying to justify what he'd done...
I just remembered it because it sounds similar to what someone else said he did with them.
sorry to harp on it.

It's all speculation Vic, I'd like to see one of the Bussekin make a knife thin and sharp enough for Bushcraft be it a Kephart style or Scandi etc,I think that for a small thin knife of this style it would be best in SR101, INFI or even 154cm if someone prefered stainless.I'm just not sure if the demand for a Bushcraft knife would be there from the followers of Bussekin knives !!!

Wonder of wonders. Donna with BRKT just sent me a message that my replacement for the VP Bowie is a Smoke Jumper in 50-100B with black linen micarta handles. It is on its way. I am surpised and very pleased with this development. She said to stay in contact with her for warranty issues as Mike stays busy making knives and forgets. I wish I had known that sooner, but at least now I can resume doing business with one of my favorite knife makers. I am so relieved to hear this because as much as I like Busse-made knives, I like my Barkies, too.

Great pics and write-up. That ML is a great looking blade.

Vic, glad to hear the BRKT has made it right. I have been looking at a few of their designs because I want a traditional skinner. I remember when you broke the BRKT, I thought no way.

Men you can't trust, women you can't trust, beasts you can't trust, but Bussekin steel you can trust

It was a defect in the steel right at the tang. I have done much more rigorous use with other Barkies and had no problem. The steel was 1085. My replacement is 50-100B (Carbon V, 0170-6C, CroVan,etc).

Have you considered reprofiling a Busse kin knife to similar geometry? I gave my Mud Puppy a thin, convex edge bevel and gave it a nice polish. It will carve wood with the best of my thin knives, and will baton and pry wood without issue. I also took my Dogfather down pretty thin and it has no trouble chopping wood without experience edge deformation. In fact before I even bought my first Busse kin product I inquired to make sure the warranty was still valid if I heavily reprofiled my edges, because to me all knives should be ground to cut. Whether I'm using a SAK or my Dogfather, I need my blade to penetrate what I'm cutting as easily as possible. To me toughness would be worthless if it didn't include toughness at the very edge at thinner geometries. Thankfully I've had nothing but good experiences with Scrapyards and Swamp Rat's under thin edge angles so far, otherwise I wouldn't be so fond of them. A tough knife that can't hold a 20 degree inclusive edge (Or thinner) is worthless to me personally.

I have thinned out my Swamprat Bandicoot a little and given it a convexed edge,it now cuts far better than before but is still not close to my Kephart when cutting wood.I was actually looking at it again today and might try thinning it down a little more, I will be sure to post an update when I have re-worked it !

Nice post Pit!

I think what this shows most is that geometry is king. The reason the SAK does so well at this, and cuts so well is because it is thin.

Personally, for me, a knife that I intend to actually cut stuff with (which is all of them) 1/8" thick max for me.

But, everyone is different. I chose that because cutting is top priority for me. Even though thin knives take abuse much more than people think, abuse is more of a litmus test, and not something I actually need to do in the woods.
