I wondeer what "SR" mean in steel names...
And in particular, what does SR-77 and SR-101 mean?
Why "SR" and why "77" and "101"?

Cheers!

I can't answer that question. What I CAN tell you is that SR-77 is a derivative of S7 and SR-101 is a derivative of 52100-B. The "SR" designations and heat treat methods are proprietary to Jerry Busse.

Yes, I know that. but I'm interesting in why did they named these steels like that. Just curious.
Now I know INFI comes from "infinity". But "SR" is another mistery now (especially because 52100 and S7 are so different steels and their derivates here are named very similary, starting with "SR" and then a number)...

I have assumed the SR stands for Swamp Rat, since that's the first place both steels were introduced by the Busse clan.

If I'm not mistaken, SR-101 was used in the Busse Basic Series before Swamp Rat was created. Maybe the name "Swamp Rat" came out of "SR" and not the other way around.

EDIT: I think I'm wrong about that. The Busse Basic series was concstructed of M-INFI. It was the Taliwhacker that was the first Busse blade manufactured out of SR-101. Somebody please correct me if I'm wrong about that. Thanks.

You are correct bld522, The Busse Basics were "Modified" INFI and SR-101 first showed up on the Busse Tali-Wacker (I still love that name)
SR-77 I belive first showed up on the Swamp Rat Crash-Ax.
NOw here is my question Res-C handels were on the Basics in 2001 and then on the Tali-wacker in later 2001-ish, is that correct?

Let me preface by pointing out that this is completely based on my reading and researching, and I have absolutely no first-hand knowledge of the situation whatsoever. This is purely from the perspective of someone who's googled a few websites out of curiosity.

From what I can gather, the Tali-Whacker, while originally produced immediately after 9/11 as a custom military run, wasn't actually released for general sale as a military overrun until 2003. That puts it after the beginning of Swamp Rat.

In other words, while the steel was used on one very special release pre-swamp, it very well might not have been "named" at that point, since it was for a custom run and had no need to be advertised.

Unless there were any other old Busse's that got that steel, I still stand by my guess that it was named SR-101 to coincide with the starting of the Swamp Rat brand.
