I would love a heavy bolo machete that could split like an axe. My Tramontina Bolo is amazing for $6, but to have a Res C handle in SR101 as Horn Dog says that is thicker and capeable of splitting some sizeable wood would be really cool. Perhaps then it is no longer a machette at this point. I don't know, but I am in.

How think does s7 even come? or can they get? would they be more expensive to make so thin because they need to grind them from thick stock?
I have to agree, I always though machetes should be pretty cheap, and I don't think one of sr77 would have many advantages over a simple one made of 1095.

I have to agree, I always though machetes should be pretty cheap, and I don't think one of sr77 would have many advantages over a simple one made of 1095. A quick web search indicates that S7 is readily available in 0.125" thickness plates. The actual price is more mysterious. The only place I can actually get a dollar amount is a company that specializes in small quantity orders, and a single piece of S7 that is 0.125" thick by 3" wide by 36" long costs a mind-bubbling 136$ (if you can live with your machete only being 2 inches wide, the cost drops to 100$). I'm sure that buying the metal in bulk from an actual foundry would be a lot cheaper (and less wasteful since they could make whatever length you want), but they all want me to submit a form to get a price quote.

I just wonder, if SY is really using scraps... would they have any thin stock readily available?
I believe BRKT released a pretty pricey (over 100$ iirc) machete and people liked it and bought it, and people seem to want one...
but for me, it's just not worth it.

The impression I got is that they use to use scraps but don't any more. Please correct me if I am wrong.

The Machete...is a fairly specialize tool...not everyone uses one daily..ecpt DocSavage....but it is a Valuable tool ,like the rest of the blades we buy. Everyone of them have a purpose. My CS Bolo is holding up well , my Ontario is heavier than need be...but a Scrapyard Machete would become a world class bushcutter....DEA , DoD and every surveyor I know would sign up for one....IF the price is right...

There are other good cheap machetes out there but there are also other good 4", 5", etc. knives out there but we still buy SY. Granted, I doubt SY will make and sell a machete for $5.99 <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif" alt="" /> But if they could make one comparable in price to a Condor, wouldn't you buy one? I would. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" /> I can look at every knife SY makes and I could find something cheaper that might serve my purpose but we all know that none of them are as good as the SY's. And, as far as being a specialized tool...what about swords? Not really your everyday carry. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" /> Anyway...interesting results. How expensive would it really be to make one?
A machete is thinner than Scrapyard's quarter-inch prybars, so that's less steel to buy... But is the major cost of a Scrapyard blade its steel? The initial machining? The primary grinding? The handle? The heat treating? How big a chunk of metal can their current equipment handle?
Without knowing intimate details about how the company works and how it buys material, I don't think we can make any intelligent comment about how expensive it would be to make a machete.
More interesting in my mind, is whether it would be a /better tool/ than what's already available. We already know that Scrapyard commits truly devoted amounts of time to making sure that they turn out only the best product. But in this case, because a machete is a very different tool than a knife (being a thinner and longer blade and subjected to very high speed impacts), would they be making the Omega of machetes or just one one that takes catastrophically damage a bit less frequently than the competition?
In other words, can they make a machete that is actually worth whatever it does cost them to make, or would even Scrapyard be unable to overcome the physics-based realities of machetes that tend to make them (comparatively) disposable. It strikes me that a machete which is so tough that it plows through everything in its path and never gets any damage in return is going to be too heavy to want to use, and a machete which actually does its job well and smoothly is going to be taking some damage from hard hits due to its geometry. Not enough to break it, but enough to dent and deform the edge, such that it requires heavy maintenance to keep in working order, and you certainly don't want to be taking a hammer and file to a hundred-dollar+ bar of steel on a regular basis...
Discuss. I hear ya Momaw, but what about the amazing videos we saw with the Waki hacking down trees and cutting through logs...? If that sword can handle it then I think a SY machete could be made to handle the same. There are no laws governing the thickness of a machete so maybe SY's machete is a little thicker than the norm...? All you naysayers - it is not economically feasible to produce a quality machete to compete with the cheap ones on the market...
maybe so, but so what ? That is not what SY / SR / Busse are competing against on any of their knives.
I think it is interesting that folks willing fork over 100s of $$$ for a sword, just to have a sword (don't get me wrong, I'd do the same if I had loads of $$$), but don't think enough people would pay a modest price for a high quality, first rate tool that you can actually use, just because there are cheap versions out there.
