In PoP's defense, I understand why he feels that SR77 is married to Scrap Yard. It's not his fault. It's DAN's fault for making so many great knives out of that alloy. But clearly, we shouldn't have any more loyalty to a specific alloy than Dan has.

If Dan is willing to change alloys or handle materials or whatever, we should be willing to do the same. That's the definition of loyalty AFAIC.

Bruce is right. It's about the company, not the steel.
Dan has made some very good knives out of different steels. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/thumbup.gif" alt="" />

Well said DotD!!! <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/thumbup.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif" alt="" />

For what it's worth, I'm not suggesting Dan WILL abandon SR-77, I'm just saying I won't mind if he does <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif" alt="" />

Knives like the Waki and M9LE have proven to me that SR-101 is more than capable in those big blade geometries, so I won't lose any sleep if SR-77 gets relegated to niche pieces like the SR crash axe or a SY machete or kuk, or abandoned altogether.

You’re all right.

Using the quality steels that come around to make knives appropriate for that steel IS the definition of a knife company with the name Scrap Yard.

But read the introduction to the site:

“He used a lot of 5160, A-2, D-2, 0-1, and other popular steels of the time until he stumbled upon S-7 shock steel. He simply could not get over the toughness of this steel and finally settled on this grade for his big fixed blades that would be called upon to stand up to ridiculous amounts of abuse and hard use. His love affair with spring and shock steels began way back then and has continued through to this day. “

Whether Scrap Yard makes another SR-77 knife or not, it’s the founding steel of the company, the Grandaddy that sits at the head of the table. Some respect is owed.

I for one really hope when Dan finally gets around to producing a Scrapyard version of the Waki or AK he uses 52100 and not S7 <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/crossfingers.gif" alt="" />
