You have to know for the most part these trips are always "window shopping” trips, but the never prevented me from taking a small stash of money with me, “just in case”. I had a pretty regular routine when visiting The Rock Shop; first I would look at the Fire Opals (my birthstone), then onto other semiprecious stones, after that it was the scales and other mechanical items. Then over to the Thunder Eggs, first the whole ones, then the cut ones. Continuing on it was the bins of fur and various leather. And then back to the room holding the high dollar stones (not that this was better then anything else it’s just the way my route took me). Finally I would end up back at the front looking at my OLD TIMER.

I don't know if it's in me. The wife and I are going out, don't think I can sneek away and post. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/doh.gif" alt="" />

It was quite a process to get me out of The Rock Shop, but my parents were always good natured.

So on this particular day while I was admiring the knives my dad asked me “which one is it you like?” I pointed to the double blade beauty. My dad then asked the man behind the counter (maybe Ed himself?!) if we could look at that knife. Had my ears deceived me? did he just ask to look at the knife I had wanted for all of eternity? Out of a slim box came the OLD TIMER. I opened the knife examining both blades still in shock. Then my dad asked if I had brought my money. Of course I had, I always brought money to The Rock Shop, what kind of question was that? Yes I replied.

Then my dad told me to pay the man. ?!?!?!?!? What? “Well you’re not taking it home without paying for it.” It was mine, really, really mine (I have no recollection of how much it was, $20 maybe).

I carried that knife with me wherever I went, even to school. Back then you didn’t get expelled for having a pocket knife. Every piece of wood around my house was whittled on. I never was any good at making anything besides sharp points, but it sure was fun seeing those woodchips flying.

Well that’s the story of my first knife and I don’t know if it’s still around. I am going to check my parents house next time I go over there. I know my dad has a few of my old pocket knives he uses from time to time I just don’t know if the OLD TIMER is in the bunch.

Unless anyone else has something they would like to talk about? I always miss the after work crowd.
