Nice review. With all the mods you do to Busse-kin knives, why are the crappy scales still on the SOG?

I have never changed the scales on any knife. I'm sure I could start doing that, but I'd rather just buy a knife that has a decent handle to start with. Sharpening is no big deal for me, but changing handles is something I have yet to do. I did sand the "Green Pine Cone" scales on my 440C version.

Rather than taking a large knife for chopping, have you considered a folding saw? With the combination of a light folding saw and a knife around the S5's size, you can do an awful lot. You can split large logs with a small knife to baton, plus a couple of pre-carved wedges, and you can cut off pieces of fallen trees easily with a good folding saw. The saws also usually save a fair bit of both weight and energy compared to either a hatchet or a chopper-sized knife.

KS,
I agree with MM here. A good folding saw would be great for you to take.
Folds up, light weight, compact, useful. You should take one in addition to
whatever knives you carry.

Cheers

That's quite a lineup Vic! Thanks for the info.

Although I haven't tried it yet, the S5 does seem like it would be a good thrower. My dad had a thing about throwing any knife and the right balance was important to him, I think he would'a liked the balance on the S5.

HD,

One question, you did not mention the Ranger Afghan in your review but showed it in your first pic. Curious as to how it compared?

Great review and pics (as usual) Vic! I really like the design of the SOG. Maybe sanding down the grips with blunt it enough to be more comfortable to hold.

*edit*
Doh, didn't read further in the second page. The sanded grips look good, definitly killed the pine cone grip feeling

The Afghan is thicker, heavier, and more robust, like the Urban Mutt. I narrowed the comparison to the thinner blades of similar profiles. I think you will agree that the S5, SERE, and Team Leader are very similar knives. Unlike those knives, the Afghan can actually chop without using a baton. The Ratmandu can, too. The Ratmandu is the best 5" blade I have ever found. I thought that with its slightly blade heavy feel, the S5 might chop, but for me it is just too light for chopping. That lighter weight may be a very desirable thing for backpakers or hikers. Don't get me wrong, I love the Scrapper 5. It is very comfortable to use, and it is right behind the Ratmandu in my choice for a perfect 5" blade. Scrap Yard makes other models for chopping.

How did you like the res c on the S5 versus the RMD? Is the perfect handle on the RMD just too much to compete with?
