WooHoo! I just got my Vex with Green Micarta scales... and love it! This is really a nice little knife! Very cool for small jobs, whittling, EDCing, etc.

[censored], now I wish I had two of these!

If anyone has a Vex (Especially with Red G10 scales) that they don't like, send it to me.... Seriously!

what color linen is that? looks great.

Like Jim says: I "Think" it is green linen (????)

Whatever it is, it is a VERY nice color IMO. And honestly some of the NICEST handle material I have EVER received from Busse and kin.

I would say it is more black than green and the green isn't bright, but subdued and earthy - kind of a grayish/brownish/green or something. (????).

Anyway, I love it.

A big part of what makes the Vex lighter than most of the Micarta-handled knives are that the handles are slim --

No doubt. Both the tang and scales are slim. I wouldn't call it hand-filling. But, I would call it very erognomic, comfortable and appropriate for this type of knife.

Even with my large hands (not overly thick, but I wear XL gloves), I find the Vex to have a good handle - secure, comfortable and nimble.

I don't know that I'll ever choose the to carry one over either an S5 or a BAD.

.... a subjective choice. Different knives for different needs.

The S5 is significantly larger and more robust in blade. It is more of an all-rounder IMO. Whereas, the Vex is more of a slicer.

The S5 is AMAZINGLY light for offering such a blade. Most Res-C knives offer a lot of bang for the ounces. But, the S5 easily offers the most bang for any Mudder so far and anything short of the S6 which is considerably larger again.

The Vex offers micarta and is still lighter than the S5. It's flat/slim profile, shorter oal and lighter weight should carry better than the S5 - especiall because it is fairly flat and about as good as any lightweight fixed blade EDC.

I have always liked the AD and the BAD is probably even better (satin and thinner), but I still can't stand the sharpening choil and Talon Hole on the BAD/AD. However, I love the AD/BAD's blade shape and I think the handle is comfortable. I just wish Jerry would make the BAD without the sharpening choil and also without the Talon Hole.

But, for anyone who like the AD and mudders, the MPLE is often under-appreciated.

-----------

I think it is hard to compare the S5 to the Vex. I just snapped some pics and lined up the front of the "grip areas" where the front of your index finger would be:

The Vex offers just a hair more grip area and more butt/pommel, but is still quite a bit smaller oal.

If I were to line up the cutting edges, the S5 is still about 0.825" longer at 4.625" cutting edge vs. about 3.8" on the Vex.

Only loosing 0.825" in cutting edge isn't bad considering the Vex is almost 2 inches shorter oal at 8.25" vs. 10.1875. Obviously, the difference is in the choil. But, I would think most people looking for an EDC would choose the VEX.
I don't mind the choil on the S5. It offers multiple hand holds that are reasonably suited for the S5. But, I am VERY glad the Vex does NOT have a choil.

Notice how much slimmer the Vex is:

The handles are obviously different and the mudders are more hand-filling. But, IMO, the VEX is every bit as secure and comfortable to my hands. And should carry WAY smaller - for those looking for a smaller EDC.

KnifeGuy, your large hands have me wondering if that is a smaller handle than usual.

????? - I don't know. This is the only one I have (unfortunately! )

But, I really doubt it. I would think it is reasonable to assume that the Vex handles are all pretty much the same in length. Busse is obviously pretty automated.

Busse scales tend to be CNC cut as well. But, I have seen some thicker or thinner in the past. Maybe their CNC cutter had been set at different heights or they had different thickness in scales blanks or something. Also, something like these Vex scales might have some hand sanding/finishing (?????) Hard to know. Jerry never says.

The RMD micarta vs. G10 were significantly different. I doubt the Vex scales had that much variance though (????).

I do have large hands. But, the VEX "Does" fit and feel great in my hands.

See the pics above and notice the Vex actually has a bit more handle "Grip area" length than the mudders. But, both work fine for me... err normally.

All of my other mudders feel fine. But, I have ground the forward nub of Res-C bump at the guard to flow into the metal part of the guard. Effectively transitioning two bump/guards into one. Which also increased my grip area on one of my S5 (not shown yet ) by about 1/4" more grip area. The modification also rounded that Res-C bump that was annoying me on the S5 - never bothered me on other Mudder handles.

My modified S5 is more roomy and significantly more comfortable. And it also balances better IMO.

I will show it when mods are more complete. I just haven't been able to do much with it lately.

Congrats!... I've been sayin'.

And if you check some of the various Busse and kin forums, a LOT of people are raving about the Vex.

It was a sleeper that is WAKING UP!

I wish I had a spare as well. But, I would take another of these linens.

Man I really like that green linen.

I gotta be faster with the send button next time!!

(I really like my black micarta too. Once it is covered in deer blood, I'll never know the difference anyway.)

Vex love! I think I love it because it is so light and nimble but still feels SOLID. That and the gorgeous tan micarta. I had said tan and black in my email thinking it was a combo but Amy-O explained it was either or. I got the tan by chance and was in awe of not only the looks but the feel as well. A friend of mine who doesn't know much about knives thought it was wood. I hope they put out more, people don't know what they're missing out on. Especially at that price.

Yep, it's definitely green linen. I didn't remember brown in mine, but I just unwrapped one to check and it's there. Indoor lighting made mine appear darker, but they'd look the same under strong natural light.
