A big part of what makes the Vex lighter than most of the Micarta-handled knives are that the handles are slim --
No doubt. Both the tang and scales are slim. I wouldn't call it hand-filling. But, I would call it very erognomic, comfortable and appropriate for this type of knife.
Even with my large hands (not overly thick, but I wear XL gloves), I find the Vex to have a good handle - secure, comfortable and nimble.
I don't know that I'll ever choose the to carry one over either an S5 or a BAD.
.... a subjective choice. Different knives for different needs.
The S5 is significantly larger and more robust in blade. It is more of an all-rounder IMO. Whereas, the Vex is more of a slicer.
The S5 is AMAZINGLY light for offering such a blade. Most Res-C knives offer a lot of bang for the ounces. But, the S5 easily offers the most bang for any Mudder so far and anything short of the S6 which is considerably larger again.
The Vex offers micarta and is still lighter than the S5. It's flat/slim profile, shorter oal and lighter weight should carry better than the S5 - especiall because it is fairly flat and about as good as any lightweight fixed blade EDC.
I have always liked the AD and the BAD is probably even better (satin and thinner), but I still can't stand the sharpening choil and Talon Hole on the BAD/AD. However, I love the AD/BAD's blade shape and I think the handle is comfortable. I just wish Jerry would make the BAD without the sharpening choil and also without the Talon Hole.
But, for anyone who like the AD and mudders, the MPLE is often under-appreciated.

I think it is hard to compare the S5 to the Vex. I just snapped some pics and lined up the front of the "grip areas" where the front of your index finger would be:
The Vex offers just a hair more grip area and more butt/pommel, but is still quite a bit smaller oal.
If I were to line up the cutting edges, the S5 is still about 0.825" longer at 4.625" cutting edge vs. about 3.8" on the Vex.
Only loosing 0.825" in cutting edge isn't bad considering the Vex is almost 2 inches shorter oal at 8.25" vs. 10.1875. Obviously, the difference is in the choil. But, I would think most people looking for an EDC would choose the VEX.
I don't mind the choil on the S5. It offers multiple hand holds that are reasonably suited for the S5. But, I am VERY glad the Vex does NOT have a choil.
Notice how much slimmer the Vex is:
The handles are obviously different and the mudders are more hand-filling. But, IMO, the VEX is every bit as secure and comfortable to my hands. And should carry WAY smaller - for those looking for a smaller EDC.
