Looks like a pretty good idea but I may just go to Home depot and pick up some sandpaper and a sanding block and try it at home. I made one using a block of wood with some mouse pad material glued to it and the sandpaper glued to that.
Just one problem. When it's time to replace the paper gotta do the whole thing. Good thing mouse pads are cheap. Belt sander would be great but out of my price range right now.

i don't like it. you can do the same with a mouse pad and a 2x4.

looks good. I think you have the right idea by making your own.
I'd just lay the paper on the mousepad and refrain from gluing it. You can always use double sided tape.

The HF belt sander can be had for around $40 (or less when it's on sale). With belts in the $1-5 range, it makes for a pretty good bargain.

there are plenty of blocks out there that use wing nuts to hold the sandpaper in place. pick one of those up and try modding that to stay flat and stable.

also, do you have any diamond stones? i have the $10 gerbers in coarse and medium, they work fine.

Yeah, all I use any more are diamond and ceramic stones. ONLY way to go. My wife bought me a Smith's course diamond stone about 8-9 years ago, still going strong. About 2 1/2 or 3 x 6 inch. And I finish up on a ceramic or fine diamond duofold.

I do have a paded plastic sanding block that I got at Lowes thats similar, but much cheaper in price.

I use that all the time.
It's basically just a plastic sanding block with wet / dry automotive sandpaper.
I went to my local tool place, picked up the block for $3.00, and got an assorted
group of grits on the sandpaper starting from 150 and went up to 1500 grit.
Total cost me about $15.00

I've used it to strip the coating off of a couple of knives, and to put a
convex edge on a couple of knives.

Although the block is a bit too big to take with me in the bush, it is good
for around home. Bought a smaller sanding block for the bush. Works just
fine. Allows me to touch up my blade edges.

Forgot to add that the one I take into the bush, just uses a couple of grits.
I take a 180, 220 and a 600 grit.

For the money the want for that kit you could get a Harbor Freight 1" x 30" belt sander.
