dig, you been out yet?

not yet, but my yak did arrive.




It was 72 degrees here yesterday and I was dying to take it out on its maiden voyage, but I did the responsible thing (according to the woman) and finished up some work in the yard and gardens....

I'm going to rig it up with a Johnny Bar this week and install a rod holder and maybe eventfully a fishfinder. This weekend is supposed to be nice, so I'll probably take it to this small no engine lake and test it out. I want to get a few sessions under my belt before I venture out on to the bigger lakes and Columbia river.

I'll post up pics of my first trip...

Hey Devil,

Can I ask how you rigged your orange safety flag? Ive seen a lot of yahoos on powerboats on our local waterways so I'd feel better in my dark green yak if I upped my visibility some.

Mine is the 4 foot model and came with a mounting base which I secured to the yak with stainless steel hardware. The MSRP is 15.99 on the website.

Also, I rigged up a PVC pipe and secured it to the milk crate as a mount for the aft navigation light. The light is a Tecktite MK III and is an adaptation of the Kayalite. The light fits inside the PVC after slight sanding of the light's plastic body. I topped the PVC with 3M Solas reflective tape and refelective orange tape from Ace Hardware to give me a bit of safety comfort after the sun goes down.

I purchased my milk crates from the Duluth Trading Company so that I would have some that are not stamped with "PROPERTY OF...DAIRY".

thanks much for the great info, Devil. Those flags are exactly what I had in mind. Love the way you have your kayak rigged. I have a bunch of milk crates, but they are the older ones which I use to store some of my excess record collection. The newer ones don't seem to fit records too well, so I ended up picking one up from the Container store so I wouldn't have to use one of the old ones.

Imagine, that old Honda is about 20 years old, has less than 2000 miles on it, and has sat for years. It belonged to my FAL who rode it to work when the weather was nice. There's even a matching fairing for it upstairs.

That is makes it even cooler and it probably gets 55mpg or better. I had a cb650 with 4 carbs that had to be synchronized just right and it was beyond my skill level. I needed the money anyway.

Hey guys... Firstly just to say, "What a great site, lots of useful tips, advice and insight"... Nice one. I'm an avid Kayak Fisherman/Camper/Survivalist from the East Coast of South Africa. I've been Kayak Fishing for about 15 years now and there's nothing better than leaving really early in the morning while it's still dark and dissapearing for a few days. Paddling out the harbour and as the day goes beach somewhere along the coast and spend the night, of course while enjoying the catch of the day. Unfortuantely having to contend with the pounding surf of the Indian Ocean isn't always pleasure, but that's what it's all about.
