I think the $200 is a major division.. I doubt Dan would want to go past it, but the DF is a lot more blade to get shiny!

I guessed $189.95, but it could well be more. Dan already mentioned that the DFLEs were taking a lot of time to finish. Time is labor is money.

I went with 199.95.

A DFLE is going to be a big chunk of shiny steel. A lot of extra work is going to be involved in their manufacture over the CG DF. That being said, I just don't see Dan pushing over the $200 mark for a knife at this time.

I look forward to finding out though!

I guessed 199.95 but Dan keeps surprising us with his aggressive pricing. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/thumbup.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" />

I think you guys are underestimating a bit. I guessed 219$ because it is going to take a lot of work and there not the need to provide people with the best user. Most of these will probably end up as safe queens. There will also be a limited amount. When you look at how much more a S6LE was than the S6CG. Look what a FBMLE costs! I love RES C but I could see micarta or even wood for handle material on the LE models someday.

I don’t think it will be that much extra work. Remember, they don’t shine ‘em up by hand the slow long way like most people do, they have benchgrinder buffers and all that. I don’t think it would take more than a few hours per knife. Of course, if you had a few hundred knives, that’s gonna add up and take a long time, but it shouldn’t add that much extra cost I don’t think.

I don’t want micarta on Dogs! It’d be the Swamp all over again! I don’t really like wood either. I’d rather have res-c or micarta. You could always mod one and make your own micarta or wood handle though. Might be a neat project. Wolf at Swamp Rat is in the process of modding his HRLM. He rounded the butt, and will be putting custom handles and filework on it. I thought it would be neat to do something like that, but I don’t have the skill for it.

i guessed $219.95

iirc.. Unsub (or was it ugug?) worked it out that..
$89.95 S6 -> $139.95 S6LE, was like +55.6%
so $139.95 DF +55.6% = ~$217.74 DFLE

But if Dan does it for less.. BONUS!!

i would imagine it's much more work.. all that polishing!
I'm polishing some bare Infi right now.. and it's a pain in the Butt!
i've stopped.. maybe i'll find some more patience later..

So Next knife.. i think i'll Buy it all polished up rather than try myself!

I prefer ResC by far on a user but it is not the best looking stuff in the world.
A Custom maker needs to charge about 100$ an hour to make it worth it financially and I could not see it being much less for Dan. I am all for Dan making a few extra bucks on the LE models so he can give a better price on the users. They are going to be at least 400$ on BF so why shouldn't Dan get a bigger percentage than some speculator.

Except Dan isn't about trying to get as much money out of us as he can. His thing is high performance knives at crazy low prices. Who here thought the Dumpster Mutt was going to be $69.95? I was expecting half that again!

I don't know what to really expect, but I think a lot of us will once again be surprised and/or shocked at the price Dan offers the LE at.

I just love the look and durablity of micarta. And rubber handles are just not much to look at, but they sure feel good. If the LE had micarta scales, it would be fine with me. I have big black DF for use, anyway.

Every commercial knife I know of that has micarta seems to cost a bit more than comparable models with rubber handles. What ever Dan does with the LEs, I hope he keeps the Res C for the user models, especially the big choppers.

I agree,
I like Res C. It's hard to beat the shock dampening and grip comfort. It spoils you.

Ok, so maybe a better example would be ones you could buy at the same time. Like CT vs. RW and BR vs. RM. It’s been a while, so I don’t remember the original prices. I think the CT was lke $119 or so. BR was like $150. I can’t remember the prices of the RW and RM right now, someone else might know.

OH!
check out this link, post #5..
http://bladeforums.com/forums/showthread.php?t=437480

Camp Tramp vs Ratweiler
$128.95 < $178.95 = $50 difference

Battle Rat vs Rat Mastiff
$148.95 < $238.95 = $90 difference (woa!)

HRLM (3rd gen) vs HR (res-C)
$128.95 > 88.95 = $40 difference

I’m glad I got mine at that price. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif" alt="" /> Cheaper than a CT! Now they sell for $200-$300. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif" alt="" /> Too bad I didn’t have the $ to buy a truckload!

I don't see how he could offer it for less than 250.00, considering that the scrapper limited twice the price of the regular.

On a side note, what price puts you mutts out of consideration for this release?

Well whatever price it is.. it'd be a Bargain compared to anything else that's on the market.

Oh man.. if Dan ever released a Sword??!!
shoot i'd follow him to hell for that Sword! (it'd be a pretty cheap trip too <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" /> )

I am guessing he will try to keep it under $200. I voted $189 though.

i should've voted Lower.. then maybe it'll be like jedi mind tricks.. and it'll get priced Lower <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" />

See, that’s the one thing I don’t like about bld522 doing these pricing surveys. I’m afraid if Dan keeps seeing that we’re expecting him to price the knives higher than he actually does, he might figure we’d gladly pay more and raise the prices on us! <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/crazy.gif" alt="" />

I'd pay 199 if it had a tan handle.
My satin BR (with a tan grip) ran 199.00, so that's how I am judging.
at that price range, it needs to be extra special for me to hop on it.

I love RES C but I could see micarta or even wood for handle material on the LE models someday.

Hmm.....that story sounds familiar. The only question then is whether another one of Jerry's relatives will start a fourth knife company after it happens.

LMAO! <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif" alt="" /> Good one, Rich. Micarta handles do seem to be the kiss of death for reasonably-priced Busse knives, all right.

Can't say I'd agree with that statement. Have you tried the new HRLM? It's seriously a lot more knife than the original HRs. The new handle makes a bigger difference than you would expect.

My first Swamp Rat is a HRLM. I absolutely love this knife. It is so right. No regrets on that purchase at all.

No sir Mr. Andy! I spoke correctly! The knife consists of blade AND handle, so more handle is more knife <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/tongue.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif" alt="" />

Why not both? I love the Res C, especially for choppers, since it absorbs some of the shock. But you must admit that micarta is nice.

No, you're right, I'm not saying that I personally would prefer it (but I'm sure I'd pay the extra anyways!), just saying that it doesn't sound like a good idea for his CG knives.

Right, diceman. But an LE will probably cost at least $50 more than a CG. How much more than that would you be willing to pay for micarta handles? And more importantly from Dan's perspective, how much performance could you expect to gain from using micarta instead of Res-C?
Your logic and reason are inescapable, Bruce. Micarta is expensive. It requires drilling and cutting and sanding. I was suggesting that maybe for the LE models, he could do it. How much would I pay for a DFLE with fat micarta scales? About $250 to $300. What's a FBMLE sell for?

I'd pay it for sure on a DFLE. Would pay $140 for a DMLE (oooh, anyone thought of asking about that yet!!?) w/ micarta slabs.

That's not the point, Kraz. How much does a HRLM with micarta handles cost compared to a Dumpster Mutt with Res-C handles or a Scrapper 6 with Res-C handles? And would you consider the HRLM to be a lot more knife for the money than either of those?

I'm comparing like blades to like blades from the same manufacturer. I think Tony or Andy calculated a $30 price increase from the HR to the HRLM? If the first knife was great at its original price and the second knife is even better then the only question is it $30 better. And, IMO, I believe the answer is yes.

I don't measure the goodness of the knife solely by the amount of steel in the blade. Certainly the blade length, width and thickness are factors in choosing a knife. However, if you have a specific application for the knife you'll find the handle ergnomics matter too. IMO, the DM with the micarta handles would be an incrementally "better" knife from an ergonomics standpoint and worth paying more money for. You can always improve things a little more but it always costs extra to do so. To say so is not a complaint against Scrapyard knives.

I would buy a Swamp Rat Dumpster Mutt with micarta handles if such a hybrid ever existed.

I understand your point, Vic. But it continues to lead me back to Dan's stated goal of producing the best performing knives at the lowest possible prices. If he extends that philosophy to the DFLE as he did with the S6LE, then micarta is simply out of the question.
Oh, I know. The DFLE will be a satin version of the one I have. I'm just saying that I would LIKE one with fat micarta scales, just so it would be pretty. There is no doubt that Res C is a superior user handle and much cheaper to make.
I hope he never quits making res C handles.

On a 6" blade or longer I agree Res-C rocks. On a sub 6" blade is where I find micarta to be nice.

I find that the Basic grip is quite attractive with the variations in texture and the little ridges... I'd like to see Dan do something "signature" to this ResC grips though - even branding the dog face on the side or something would do it for me and wouldn't be too much work I don't think.

I started quite a thread with the idea of micarta or wood handles.
I would only want to see micarta or wood on a LE model. I would definitly not want anything but RES C on any of the other yard knives. I have bought 2 pieces of canvas micarta for a knife I made and they were 20$. I would rather see wood myself especially on a bowie. Hickory is one of my favorite handle materials because it is cheap and with the proper grain hickory is almost twice as strong as the next strongest wood. I get my hickory from old tools at the recycle centre.
It is a great material. People tend to forget natural materials nowadays but in many cases they are better than the synthetics that have replaced them.

Just think of a satin Dogfather with a hickory handle and nice leather sheath.
I would keep mine mint and think it would look great next to my CG dogfather once it has 10 or 20 years of scars. You could still use a hickory handled DF just as
hard as a CG and it would be awesome for reanactors. I totally agree that Swamprat changing to micarta was a bad idea(other than it led to the scrapyard being viable)but it makes sense only for a limited edition model.

I like your idea Diceman. The SS4 had mudder grips and a satin back edge to make it special.

I don't see how he could offer it for less than 250.00, considering that the scrapper limited twice the price of the regular.

On a side note, what price puts you mutts out of consideration for this release?

I don't know if I can drop more than $150 on a blade.

isn't that the truth?!

The SS4's mudder handle is AWESOME! it is Substantial, fills the hand Very nicely.. and you can just Crank on that knife! I Love the Mudder handle!

the small basic handle just seems a bit small.. even for my medium hands.

I definitely prefer the Mudder handle.

The Combat Grade Dogfathers will be released again too, likely at the same $140 price point. The DFLE is more likely to approach $200. I hope that the CG's come back before too long though. I've seen them going for some aweful inflated prices on Ebay in the mean time! ($250)

No - they'll come later. The DFLE's have been made for a while, but have been getting a lot of hand finishing done on them. The S6 should be shortly after that, and then hopefully the DF will follow. I'd say it'll at least be a couple of months. You'll likely be able to get a DFLE for the same price as the CG's are going for on the secondary market though!

So far, 4 out of 10 people think Dan will charge $189.95 and another 2 out of 10 think he'll charge $199.95. So most of us think the DFLE will cost less than $200.00. Anybody else want to cast a vote?

Yeah. I voted for $149.95. Positive thinking! <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif" alt="" />

I am sure they will, but at least Dan will get a better percent of profit. If people are willing to pay 2x the price Dan should charge at least 50% more. The after market will do what it does best...rip off people. So Dan should make a few extra dollars off of it.

I am with Gravelface on this one. I would like to see Dan make a higher percentage of the LE models than the CG versions. That way the collectors and daytraders can subsidize the users a bit.

I don't understand what you're saying. When people in the secondary market charge twice the retail price because people are willing to pay it, it's a rip off, but if Dan were to double his retail price(Well, not double it. 50% markup, as you've postulated. Same idea, though) because people were willing to pay it, it's a sooooper idea. Why don't you just send him a tip?

It all comes down to that I hate the People that buy 10+ copies of a blade in order to flip it right away for a profit to the same people they call "friend"......"Oh you missed out on it...well I happen to have a spare and you can have it for $90 for than I paid 2 days ago!" I feel Dan should o get in on this and charge a bit more. Buying extras isn't the problem.....I know a few folks do this to help cover the people who are at work or away while the knives are released and then offer them at a minimal markup....5 plus shipping.

Just because people are willing to pay it doesn't make it a good idea. If people want to play these games they should play the stock market.

My tip wouldn't cover what I think he deserves. Not only for creating affordable knives for those quick enough to get them while he has them to offer, but for creating this great forum, and when I see people charging outragous fees for knives that are still in the cardboard sheath, I feel Dan should get a bit more....I know running this place isn't free, maybe he could give a bonus to his employees or start making some of that Gear we all want......if he would charge more these things may be possible....we all know his blades will sell for whatever price these scoundrels place on them.

If I understand you correctly, StabbyJoe, you're questioning the idea that it's a rip off if day traders charge more than they should on the secondary market but it's not a rip off if Dan charges more than HE should. That's a pretty darn good question if you ask me.

Something like that. "Should" might be better off exchanged for "could." Price of sale is going to be an agreement between supplier and consumer in all but the rarest instances.

And shouldn't everyone be able to get a New Blade at Dan's price. Older blades that have been off the market for a while...sure, I get that. But this.....this just pisses me off.

You realize that some people actually sell knives for a living, right? I understand what you're saying. You resent the effect that scarcity has on pricing and the difference between a pure collector and an entrepreneur.

And raising initial retail prices would neither make the knives more available to collectors nor prevent markups in the secondary market. So why aren't you giving him "a bit more?"

Sure! That would be awesome. Unfortunately, as I understand it these knives are limited mainly due to the supply of material as opposed to an artificially limited production run. If production was not so limited, everyone could get one at Dan's price. It is, so they can't.

Then go ahead and give it to him. If Dan charges more, your wannabe knife dealers will charge more as well, making it even harder on the poor collectors who missed the dinner bell.

They are both entrepreneurs. Dan COULD charge more. Flippers COULD charge less. They price their items for their own reasons.

Which means Dan would have to set a quantity limit. And he's not going to do that. Nor do I believe he'll raise his prices because of potential price increases in the secondary market. And that's pretty much all there is to it.
That would be the end of buying spares, buying extras for gifts, buying extras to cover people who couldn't camp in front of the computer at the right time, etc. Talk about cutting off your nose to spite your face! I also think Dan will keep his pricing inline with his norm. As I've said, people set their prices for their own reasons. I think Dan's goals are pretty clear; to provide a product of incredible quality and functionality at an unbeatable value -- resellers bedamned.

At the end of the Day all we have is the relationships we have with people and those that continue to Rip off folks will find their pocket books fat (if they think they are going to make any real money from this) and real lonely.

Ripoff is completely subjective. No one has to buy a SY knife. People choose to buy these beauties. First choice is to buy from Dan. If you screw that up, you pay the price. If it wasn't worth it, you wouldn't pay. How do you rip someone off when they voluntarily pay what they feel a product is worth?

I part with most of my cash begrudgingly. I imagine you do as well, which might explain your hesitancy to just send some extra money on over to Dan. Keep new people away from the SY? No way. It makes it even more appealing to become part of the crew here so you can be in the know, get your blade at the right time, and cut the resellers out altogether.

well, the cool thing about Busse family knives is you can sell 'em for at least what you paid, oftentimes More.

Not all the handle shapes agree with my hand.. so it's nice to be able to get the money back out.. try something else.. etc.. until the "perfect" knives are found.

i think realistically.. the only way to stop Flippers.. is for folks to Stop buying from them.. or the knifemaker impose some kind of limit/s.

it's kind of a catch-22.

You may have noticed that Scrap Yard doesn't exactly need any secondary distributors or dealers. They can sell out directly to the public. If they did have distributors, Dan would make even less money selling to them at wholesale prices so they could beat the freelance resellers. And the stock would still dry up immediately and the resellers would sell at whatever price they wanted anyway.

good point SJ.
At least We are dealing directly with Dan (well those who get in on release day).
That's nice to know. Dan gets money, we get knives.

Dealers (middlemen) would definitely take their cut (from both Us and Dan).

Besides, those are Authorized dealers for the most part.......no one is as far as I know for Scrap Yard.

That is what happens with all the Scalpers...you just described the current situation.

I imagine you do as well, which might explain your hesitancy to just send some extra money on over to Dan.

What the hell are you talking about?

I've asked you several times why you don't just send Dan some extra money for your order, since he deserves it(and judging by the secondary market, the blades are worth it).

well.. like bld522 said once (twice, maybe many times!)
the Only person who has the power to Limit flipping is Dan.. by imposing Limits of some kind on Buyers. and nobody can totally Stop it.

But that just means Lots of Extra (police) work for Dan!.. at same (or less) money!

and honestly, Dan is prolly Elated that they sell so fast! he doesn't have to inventory lots of stock!
..but he'd rather be Grinding more knives and Drinking!

So the onus to stop flippers falls on Us then! i guess we can try to ostracize flippers, expose them.. they'll try selling on other forums, e-prey, etc.
..but we'd rather be Using our knives and Drinking!

And I replied to you 2 pages back when you first posed this question.

Quote

You never really answered my question. No one's asking you to do more than your part. Just send some extra money in. Give him "a bit more." Who cares if you cover what he deserves? Just make the effort. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/thumbup.gif" alt="" />

Well on my next order I will include a tip, should the standard 18% tip cover it, or do you think it should be more?

I don't think you should include anything extra. However, it doesn't matter how much I think you should pay. How much do you think you should pay? Why don't you just send that much?

Oh, right. You can't give him what he deserves. Well then, why should he raise the prices to get "a bit more" if it won't cover what he deserves? Or better yet, why not just send him your portion of "a but more" regardless of whether it covers what he deserves or not. At least he'll have "a bit more" from you. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif" alt="" />

Well the beauty of the situation is that we'll all pay whatever Dan asks and those of us who are moved to pay more can do that. I think this solution is utterly sublime.
Yeah, I think it works out pretty well.

Guys - this is one of the most RIDICULOUS arguments I have seen on this forum !!! <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/mad.gif" alt="" /> Put down your mouse and step away from the computer - you need to take a sanity break!

I hardly think than Dan and Patti are ready to cry "POVERTY" - give them credit for being the highly successful company that they are! And please stop this silly bickering over nothing! <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/cool.gif" alt="" /> Tom

That sounds great......20 extra for Dan for each purchase I make. I think we should start a movement. Or the 20 extra can go to a fund to set blades aside for folks that miss the initial release of a blade or to deserving members of groups/military/ or otherwise. Blades to get in contest. Something.

I had a lot of ill will towards the flippers when I first embarked on this hobby about a year ago. I wanted a Battle Rat in the worst way. However, I could not bring myself to pay $200+ for something that originally sold for $148.95. So I decided to wait. Soon after Scrapyard Knives came along. I still find it crappy that some people miss out because somebody bought 20 of them in order to flip. However, if you have the capital to buy inventory that can be doubled quickly, it is a great way to make some quick money. I bought three. Two to keep, and one as leverage. It looks like it is going to score me some Scrapyard INFI.

Two wrong conclusions, Kraz. Although the bargain doesn't hurt anything, I'm actually here for the knives. And if you think about it, would Dan sell his products under market if making money was his primary objective?

You made a statement that implied that SYKCO is rolling in the dough. Small businesses are fragile, stuff happens, like unexpected medical bills for example. Capitalizing equipment is darn expensive and has to be done over several years.

You have no facts to support your opinions. You do not know the financial state of their personal lives or business never mind whether it is good or bad. I find your comment extremely inappropriate.

Instead of posting a rant (I don't have time!), I'll just state that I share Gravelface's feelings on the matter, but have no viable solution. To me, a limit of 5 would be fair, but its not my decision to make. I hate scalpers. I really do.

When you have one-time-only models, and they sell out literally minutes after they are released, then yes I think there should be limits imposed on how many any one person can buy. Someone buying 20 of them and selling them on eBay the next day at a 50%+ markup doesn't do Scrapyard or their customers any good.

I love the one off's. It makes them special. I would not be as fond of my SS4 if
they were coming out again. I bought 2 or 3 Mutts to resell to some friends who don't understand the unique way you have to buy a scrapper. I figure about 25% of my total cost is fair considering I have to put out a fair bit of cash and import stuff from another country. Still if no one bought them and I was stuck with 4 Mutts it's not exactly a tragedy.

If Dan really needed cash he could do custom versions. Kid needs braces, infi dogfather with elk antler scale handle would sove that right quick. Or if he can't get any infi a run of 20 DGuard DF's at 500$ a pop.

I don't think Dan will do much if any custom versions like I described but Jerry does them which is where I got the idea. I think if you wanted a custom scrapper you would need to find something Dan wanted more than just cash. With Jerry it's Johnny Walker Blue but Dan is still a mystery.

Who else likes the idea of Scrapyard mil overruns like the recent Sage wardens?

That's true. But rightly or wrongly, it also makes them the focal point of dissension and resentments.

At the risk of being flamed again, I don't think custom versions such as those you've described will ever become necessary. If Jerry and Dan decided to take over a larger share of the consumer knife market, they could do so in their sleep, walking backward with their hands tied behind their backs. The reason they don't do that is because they don't need to. They've both admitted, directly and indirectly, that fulfilling military contracts consumes the majority of their production. And everybody knows just how lucrative military contracts can be. Entire industries are built on them.

I think it would be an excellent idea to put the micarta handels on the LE and/or special limited knives. It would make them stand out even more. It would probally raise the price up too.

I'm with Gravelface and Diceman on this only I don't think hiking up the prices will help any.
If somehow dan could limit people to say an order of three knives, that's one to use , one as a spare and one for the pal who missed out due to work etc....surely enough for anyone !!!
It would also help if we did not pay these ridiculous prices asked on the secondary market....just tell them where to stick their 6 extra Dog Fathers !!!
I for one am on here because I cannot afford Swamprats or Busses so let's keep the prices down and ensure that all here are able to enjoy the blades !!!!

If it didn't, perhaps it's because it doesn't exist yet.

I think they do. Dan previously mentioned that it was taking a long time to finish them. So, I think they're in the process of being finished up.

Part of me hopes that the reason Dan didn't bring them to Knob is to let us here in the Yard be the first to know and have a shot at them. No doubt he could of had enough ready to start the show at knob with them
