1867 was when Canada became a confederation.
After the British conquered Quebec in 1608, they proclaimed the British North America Act, they gave Quebec special considerations because they believed that thousands of Americans would move north and the french would become a weak minority.
Maybe someone should have told them to look at a map, leave Virginia or Florida to live in Quebec, ya right I guess they thought Quebec had the most to offer Americans on the east coast. But I guess Americans would pick America because it's America, not for the government, but for the geography. I would think it would be the same for Canadians. I'm sure they love living in Canada.

Remember in 1608, it was a more colonial system in both countries, with the fur trade being a large economic driving force.
It was the climate more then anything else that kept the british colonies from moving northwards

Since childhood I've been trying to explain it to people and they all believe the other version. It has me second guessing myself. It's refreshing to have someone else remember the truth.
