Can someone please explain the asymmetrical edge thingy?

Hi guys,

I've had a couple Busse asymmetrical edges so I'll try to explain them a bit. What it amounts to is one side of the blade has a large amount of edge...almost chisel ground. Then the grinder is lightly used on the other side. What you end up with is less of a "v" edge and one that would look more like a checkmark. That make sense?

The advantage of this is to leave more steel thickness behind the edge for chopping applications. Since I chop left handed though, it gave me a bit of a disadvantage, because upon impact, the shape of the edge would deflect the blade toward my body rather than away from it. I grind any asymmetrical edges I get back into a v.

Hopefully I have helped rather than just add more confusion. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif" alt="" />

360joules,
that Does help!

Reminds me of when folks complain about knife makers putting a single-edge on the wrong side.. iirc they put on left side for appearance.. and right-handers do not like. And vice versa.

I think symmetric edges would be the way to go.. for lefties And righties!

Great explanation 360j! (Like I said I could be wrong!) I hate chisel grind so that's the Basic 9 off my 'Christmas list'! Bring on the DF though!!

Well GF, I have never seen "Serenity", but I certainly understand wanting to handle a chopper! <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/thumbup.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif" alt="" />
