From what I have read and learned, the difference between a subterranean, underwater or even an air burst from a leaking nuke plant is that the fuel in a burst is mostly spent when it turns into blast energy. A leaking facility is releasing actual fuel instead of just trace amounts.

However, if you look at Hiroshima and Nagasaki, you will see that the nukes do indeed kill. Within four months more than 100,000 died from radiation poisoning alone, and those were relatively small compared to what we have tested since.

Reading your comments, I think you have the media and the government too closely tied together. I have worked on both sides and can assure you, the Public Affairs offices within your government are not happy with the media.

As for retractions, there have been many surveys on them, and it doesn't matter how you present them, nobody will forget the first impression. The main reason they are printed or braodcast at all is to save themselves from libel suits.

JJ, you are right on Japan in WWII. The bombs then were a different grade of stuff than what we use now for weapons grade.

As to the Japan deal, a buddy of mine's step dad had a pice of a bldg that he picked up in Hiroshima right after the war. We were in OH visiting him and he started talking about his hair loss started at 19, I asked him if he thought it had anything to do with the time he spent in post-war Japan?
