A lot of folks swear by natural stones. I have used them for many years. But now all I use are diamond hones, well almost. I use a course hone, a medium/course ceramic hone and a fine diamond hone. Then I just strop it some on a pad of notebook paper. The cardboard backing works exceptionally well.

I've got a Sharpmaker, stones, and some sandpaper and a mouse pad. I can use all three, but the easiest is the Sharpmaker. I've always got a stone with me, even if it's just a small one.

Most of the time when it digs into my thumbnail. I used to work and work for a perfect laser edge. Then I found out I didn't need anything like that for my uses. And when I sharpen blades for the deputies, that is also what they get. None of them have complained yet.

Bottom line, when YOU are satisified, it's sharp enough.

Just run the blade from the nail bed to the outer end. If it bites, you've got a pretty good useable edge on it, at least I do on mine.

That's good enough for most things you'll ever need to cut.
