Alright, I'm relatively proficient on a wood lathe, I was wondering if you guys had any ideas as to how I could make a handle for a ferro rod such that I could replace the rods as necessary. I have access to Cherry, Maple or Walnut... The only thing I need a lot of help with is the replaceable part...

I just made a couple out of oak last week.
I drilled the holes on a drillpress then shaped them on the beltsander.
The fit isn't real tight & I didn't think about replacing them & put a dab of superglue gel into each one.
I just tried to get them off & have to hold the rod with pliers & really twist & pull to get the handles off,but they did come off without any damage.I'll just add another dab of glue & be good to go.
I've got 5/16 rods so it'll be awhile before I have to replace them, but it's good to know I can.
Thanks for the idea & I hope my info helps.

Here they are with hacksaw blade scrappers I put a patina on with mustard after sanding the paint off.

cool, good to know something as simple as that works, I was thinking to go some insanely complicated route, but this works, so I'm good to go Thanks for the help <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif" alt="" />

Myke, looks good. I would think drilling the hole a little smaller diameter than the rod would allow a good press fit and for a decent easy removal when the rod is done.

you could also clamp the rod in a vice and pound the handle on if need be

my thought was screw together pieces with a griping collar. sort of like compression fitting or how drills hold the bits. probably a lot of hassle and rooms for failure with wood though.

I was thinking something along the lines of building a washer/female threads into the handle and male threads on the ferro rod, would have been much harder... I coulda done it though

But you might split the wood.
A 19/64th drill would be the next size down & might work though.

BTW I don't think I have said....

Welcome aboard MrOverkill.
Please post pics when you get it done. The wood choices you have sound good & should look good too.
