There is a lot of talk regarding which steel is used for the upcoming knives?
How does these types of steel compare to each other, pros and cons?

In my humble opinion SR77 is better for larger chopping type knives or axes. Very tough stuff and will dent or roll rather than chipping...the downside being that the edge holding ability ain't as good as SR101, 1095, A2, O1 etc.

SR101 (52100)is an awesome all round steel. Amazing edge holding,gets razor sharp and yet is still tough enough to take serious beatings.

I'll let other people pay 4 times the cost for INFI steel, I'd be quite happy if all my knives were SR101 ! <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/thumbup.gif" alt="" />

I have no Busse, but I've never brutalized my SY or SR knives where I thought I needed to. My SR101 is plenty strong and sharp! Some people will talk of corrosion...I live in SoCal so that is not a problem. If you work on "Deadliest Catch" it may, if you don't it should be fine

PS I love my CGDF and would love a SY or SR 9" to do a scientific (Beat the snot out of) comparision. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif" alt="" />

Third; I will no doubt form an opinion in the next few months! I've got INFI and sr77, be nice to have sr101 too. I like Dan's res-C and sr77 combo's. The S6 is very hard to beat.

The coating on the CG Yard knives protects the tang from corrosion under the res-C so not a problem there. That would be my major issue with corrosion. Blade/edge corrosion comes off with use, so again not a problem! (If you beat on your dogs nice and regular that is!)

Moral; oil and abuse them and they'll thrive!

Honestly after working in the knife store in fort Wayne and watching my friend work on the different busse family steels and his opinions of all of I personally think sr101 is the best of them if you take the proper precautions with it. First thing I would do is strip the blade and give it. A proper gun blueing personally thing it looks better and protects better.and of all the blade coatings the black powder gotta be the easiest to get off sage I thing being the worst. And what's nice bout gun blue is that if it wears off it is easy to repair it.

Oh and Paul might be able to get you a full black sod buddy has one don't know if he selling it though. If he did sell it would come with full on custom sheath and proper sharpening.

i have been wondering which one is better.

i only have sr101, no sr77. they dont seem to have any sr77 knives in stock at the time though so i will have to wait <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/frown.gif" alt="" />

I'm a fan of all of 'em. When push comes to shove, I think my Chopweiler made of differentially heat treated SR-101 is the LAST blade I would ever part with.

Got nothing against SR-77--my DF would be my SECOND-TO-LAST blade I'd ever part with <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif" alt="" />

The chopweiler still doesn't need sharpening--easily shaves my hairy legs--despite LOTS of abuse. I've needed to sharpen and work a few small dings out of my DF, although I've beaten more than my fair share of trees with it before it got to that point.

I like 1095 a lot too, eventhough it is a simlpe tool steel. But it gets the job done.

i cant say which one i like more out of sr101 and 1095 due to my small amount of experience with sr101, so far so good though!

Good thread, as I am new to this facet of the knife world, and trying to figure out this, and much more. Seems like all this reading has led me to suspecting that I will wind up with a collection of 2 each of 77 and 101 knives in small, med, and large sized blades.
