Based on personal experience I think the 338 winmag only really out performs the 300 winmag when using heavy for calber bulletsMuch the same as the 30/06 over the 270

ok you gun guys im gonna buy my first gun a .22lr just to get back ionto the swing of things. a little range plinker. I was contemplating a Marlin 39 a golden. Any thoughts?
As for my firearms experience... not alot.

first time I fired a gun was at camp while in the Cadets. a church based group akin to boyscouts with merit badges and the whole 9 yards. We shot a little .22 that was a bolt action. I dont remember much from that it was long ago but I loved it.

Fast forward to when I was 19.. joined the army. In the army I qualified Expert with My m-16, M203, Saw and thrown hand grenades.

during my tour in Germany we only hit the range a few times.

I have never fired a handgun.

Here is my long term plan gun wise.

First Im gonna get a .22lr I am leaning towards the Markln I mentioned above.
Still tryin to figure what pistol to pair with it.

 Then pair a Marlin 1894c 38./.357 with a Smith and Wesson .357.

Im going relatively cheap ammo interchangeable between pistol and rifle.

I chose lever actions ... just because. Looks cool, kinda like old west cowboy.
I have heard that the guns I have mentioned here are reliable.

Eventually Ill try and get my hands on a shotgun and a large caliber automatic like a .44 Desert eagle...

But baby steps lets hit things off wiht my choice of .22 lr

If you have suggestions other than the marlin I mentioned feel free to suggest
 them. Bolt action,magizine,lever...whatever.

Will be my first gun and all that I will have for a while. Another reason Im makin gthe .22lr my first gun. Relatively cheap and ammo is dirt cheap.

The other guns I mentioned will be bought out over the next 3-4 years.

Seems like you have thought out what you want. Just make sure your selections cover what you need from your firearms, such as hunting or defense.

I only selected those after much research on the internet. the internet can be fun and informative but sometimes you just gotta ask the guys that know...

That marlin is a good gun, but you may also want to look at the 10/22I think a good quality 22 lr is a great place to start, my preference is a bolt action, but I am old school
I have a marlin 1894c in 44 mag, I bought it used about 20 years ago and I have never had a problem with it
I haven't owned one in 357 myself but from what I hear they are very reliable

When I taught my daughter's to shoot they started off with an air rifle, to teach the fundamentals then we moved up to a single shot 22You obviously have more than the basics already, so find a 22 that you find comfortable to hold and is within your budget

My personal opinion, which may not mean much.
For a 22 rifle, If it is just to get you used to shooting, get a bolt action.

Here is my reasoning. A semi-automatic can get you used to FAST follow up shots whereas a bolt makes you take your time. It makes you want to/need to make every shot count because it takes longer between shots. Whereas the semi auto is bang bang bang, as fast as you can pull the trigger.

You need to learn trigger control and ACCURACY first, before anything else.

My 2 cents. Hope it helps.

Sounds good so far.
Recommendations on a good bolt action? I guess magazine fed or you think single shot...
