Dont love or hate them, but the 511 dosnt need one. The larger ones I sometimes like.

I just love choils in general. They add another option for use, while sacrificing a part of the blade that I am better able to use 2 inches higher with a choil. It's like the opposite of serration...it just makes sense.
The new Rats do it VERY well (now pretty much my favorite blades), however I'll cut a corner off of my Busse card and note that the knife that made me fall in love with choils was the Blackhawk Tatang. Before that knife, I just thought choils were a waste of blade. And now, choils are almost a requirement for me to pick up a knife. I would have liked to see a choil on the 1311 TBH.

I like the choil for just one reason; being able to sharpen all the way up the blade without any scuffing. I suppose that it could also provide a bit of added protection in case of handle slip.
I usually hold the blade by the spine. I never get my fingers close to the cutting edge in normal use because I am gripping the back of the handle and R I P P I N G.

I love them with two conditions:
1) They're big enough to use
2) They cutting edge of the blade is angled away from the choil so you don't cut your finger when choking up on the blade.

The only time I don't prefer them are on knife designs where the base of the blade is itself the guard (with the blade width being more than the handle width). Think roach belly design. Other than that, I like being able to get that close to the edge for fine cutting.

Choils on large blades are GTG IMO. On medium blades, they are fine...take 'em or leave 'em. On small blades, especially those with animal processing in mind, choils are a pure hindrance IMO.

Voted for no choil.
If I need one on the blade later, I can always mod it to my liking, but I can not magically add missing steel. Small choils with big fingers makes for a knife with my blood on it, which also is no good.

I prefer them on big knives to give me a more neutral balance when doing finer things. I hardly ever use them on my 711 because I generally have a smaller knife for that kind of thing though. Personally, I think a dual grip handle with no choil would be the best of both worlds. Something akin to Blind Horse's machete where you hold it at the base to chop and up near the guard when cutting cord and such. Imagine the 711 with the res-c extending up the blade to give you an actual comfy grip on the center of gravity/choil area. I think about that every time I use a choil.
On small knives I absolutely hate them.
