I have decided to start a fund for this because there is a hole in the safe where one should be. I want ghost ring sights and a pistol grip stock. I want or plan on adding a side saddle, and a extended mag tube. Also I hear they make great coyote guns from some guys that hunt them around here and I want to try it.
The mossburg guns aren't bad. But I don't like the safety
I like the Remington 870 platform but I don't like the quality of finish they have used in the past few years. And they don't have a good ghost ring sight.
I have taken a shining to the Benelli supernova because if the zombie apocalypse happens I can shoot any ammo I can find. It has great sights, has the mag cut off feature, safety placement, And the finish on the Benelli guns I have seen has been really weather resistant. Plus the price point Doesn't seem to bad.
So does anyone have a nova they could tell me how they like it. Or any thoughts on the subject if tactical shotguns. Pics of what you run would be appreciated. Thanks GD <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif" alt="" />

My pet hate in the world...LOL
OK... no experience with the Benelli but over 30 years with the 870. If your heart is set on an auto no problem but why not get an old 870 (they are really common used from my experience in the US (cosmetic issues are no problem) ) and have it fitted with GR sights and a refinish (if required). All manner of stocks and accessories are available to make it work for you.
I bought my first 870 in 1983 (I was 14 at the time) and have carried them at work for the past 20 years. I have experience with training guns that were first put into service in the early 70s and have been beaten on ever since. The ugliest was recently given a face lift as a project, new springs all round (no needed but done), updated shell lifter, new stock work (had original timber that was painted black and still functional) and cerakoted. At the end it was the best looking and smoothest running gun in a rack of 30...!!!

I have a 870 with a cantilever slug barrel and 28inch field barrel. I agree that they are still a good shot gun. The 870 is nice that you can swap parts so easily. The Benelli m4 would be my choice but I am trying to get this to be a less than 700 dollar buy including mag extension tube and Mesa tactical shell side Sattle. I don't really have the funds or tools to put on the ghost ring sights I like on the 870 and I don't want to pay to refinish a brand new gun. and the Benelli does have the ghost rings i like standard from the factory. I like that Remington's new tactical guns take rem chokes so if you have to hunt with it you can help compensate for the short barrel.
It's still a hard call. I have a 870 already so if things went bad and a part broke on one I can steal a part from the other. But the benellis I have seen are outstanding quality.

If you are going for an end of the world gun, go with the 870, OR 1187 maybe?

Watched two new 1187s fail miserably this fall when guiding clients. Me and the other guide were trying to get them to work and had to let the clients barrow guns to hunt.
It's either the 870 or the Benelli super nova.

I'm partial to mossbergs. I have the maverick 88 variant and i love it. That's a little trickier to find mods for though. Also the 88 has a standard trigger safety, not the tang safety like the 500. No experience with benelli.

You can find used department 870s for decent prices. They're heavy duty and much more durable than the Express models, and I've never had a problem with an Express. To buy one and install a side saddle and ghost rings wouldn't cost you much. Just shop around for one that still functions well and you'll have yourself a very reliable shotgun.

I will see what I can do. I haven't seen used LEO guns here but I haven't really been looking either. One problem with the express is at the end of the factory tube the stamp a indention into the tube and it effect reliability. So if I can find a non express model it would certainly be something I would strongly consider.

I was also winding about the 870 express vs 870p vs the plain 870. Any info on this?
I looked and my current 870 just has Remington 870 on the side. My dads say 870 express magnum.

i like the mossberg 500 series. i would avoid a psitol grip stock because of the safety though. i'm replacing my knoxx pg with a regular shoulder stock.
i also like the look and feel of the mossberg 590 and 930. ive been looking at the jerry miculek 930 and it looks like a good option for a semi auto. nit sure if/when I will get around to getting another shotgun but a 590 or 930 is likely what i'd get.

I would consider a 590a1 but the saftey on the rear if the tang isn't really my cup of tea. I have a Knox spec ops NRS on my sabot gun for deer hunting and I find I really like it So I want the shoulder stock with the grip on it.

So I did some research and its between the Benelli and the 870p.
It seems the express line of tactical guns doesn't have the same quality of parts I want.

Doing some reading over at shotgun world. And the guys are claiming the new police guns are almost the same as the express. Just three different parts. I'm a little confused. I thought remington police were ringmasters with a different configured barrel/stock. Any thoughts?

I would think those guys know what they're talking about. Best to get an old police model just to be safe. Not there is anything wrong with Express models.

Some of the new express models have full lengthy mag tubes so you don't need a extension tube. Not sure if I like or don't like that.
I'm thinking Nordic components mag tube if I get a gun that needs one. Mesa tactical side saddle. New follower Over size safety And I want the gun to come with ghost rings because that a expensive up grade to do later.
The only remington 870P I like avalible from the factory is the 24591 model but I'm not sure if u can find one or how much it would run.
Also I'm not sure how the Remington finishes will hold up. I have never heard of somebody having to refinish a nova. But my remington is almost brand new and it lightly misted when I was deer hunting this fall and with in the hour I had surface rust on a oiled gun. My sisters remington also suffers from a weak finish. But my dads old 80's model 870s finish is tough I've seen it hit concrete and not a scratch.

Just found that mossburg makes a semi 930 set up for three gun that can be had for the same price as some of the new 870 express tactical models. Around $600. The 930 I used guiding in the fall didn't fail me once..... So now another gun is thrown in the mix. I'm not a big mossburg fan but for the money it's hard to beat.
It will probably come down to what I can get a hold of locally for the cheapest.
Benelli supernova tactical can be had for $500 plus or minus $100. Needs mag tube and side sattle Remington 870 SGA or 870police or 870express tactical needs seem to be any where from $499-$799 depending on model. Needs side saddle. Mossburg 930 three gun or 930tactical model semi auto. List $730-$780 but I hear they can be had for $100 cheaper. Needs side sattle

this thread go me thinking and googling. i was thinking something like the jerry miculek 930 would be nice but i would prefer not to have the guys name on my shotgun. while googling i came across a post where some guys took mossberg 930 waterfowl guns and the barrels cut down and setup for chokes. they had sights and magazine tube extensions added. i'm liking this idea and the base shotgun isnt all that expensive. here's a picture of one.

Back in the day (1989 in fact) I took an 1100, chopped teh 28inch VR barrel to 20 inches, added a Polychoke, Millet Three Bar Sights, Choate Stock and forend, Choate follower, Choate Extension tube and a UM enlarged safety. That thing was just hell on hogs in the scrub...!!!!!!!
Gundog, I would still be shopping for an old and ugly 870 and built it up from there.

Because the area that I live doesn't have many gun shops anything I want tactical will have to be ordered in. So it's a blessing and a curse. I don't really get to handle the gun before I put the cash down. If I get a used one I really feel like I need to inspect it myself before I spend money on one. And the bad new if this with a new gun is I don't get to feel which feels better of the new ones without driving all over Ohio Kentucky and Indiana.
I think I just need to set a budget that includes money for the gun and accessories. Other wise I'm going to be getting a Benelli M4!!!!

Also I have been thinking of using this set up for a lot of the thick brush hunting I do for deer and hopefully soon coyote. So I want a light weight gun that not going to be a pain to carry. So I need to consider weight too. Looks like most of the guns are coming in at about 7.5-9 pounds.

I recently picked up a Mossberg 930 JM Pro with a 22". I had a 930 SPX prior a few years ago and I really liked it so I figured I would give this 930 JM Pro a shot. Thus far I am really glad I did as it has a 22" brl, 9 shot capacity, raised rib, chocke tubs, stock shims, large charge handle, synthetic stock, tube clamp, with Nordic parts. I ran over 250 rds through it a few weeks ago--slug, buck, #4 buck, #4 shot, # 7 1/2 shot heavy field loads, and bulk #8 shot from Wally World. The shotgun ate everything that I threw at it, the cheap shells could be told from the heavy stuff but they still worked. Cleaning the shotgun is very easy, and it is recoil operated so don't hang a bunch of stuff of the end of it and it should perform great. I think for the price you can not beat it, I will either pick up the parts to make a hunting gun too or just get a combo kit gun for dove and deer. Take a look at it, for the money saved over a Benelli I say you can't go wrong.

Thanks. I agree the 930 duck gun I ran guiding last fall never had a problem from low base 7 1/2 - 3in BB loads.
I guess I will just have to see.
How do they feel weight wise. I'm not a small guy but I do hate carrying around a heavy shotgun.

I also between the two 930 you hade which do you think would work better for thick brush hunting, HD, zombie apocalypse, and as an all around hard use gun?

Have you checked the classifieds in your local papers? I found a Benelli M4 USM Brand new for $1,600 here in SLC.

here is 1 of my 2 current 870's i have sold my 2 previous ones posted here & revamped my lineup <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" /> my home defense gun started like as this one... http://www.remington.com/en/products/fir...-blackhawk.aspxi have since changed the stock out to a regular speedfeed "short stock " & added a limbsaver pad i mainly went with this model because i liked the fact that it did not have an added on mag extension,,,i can sill get 7rds in it but w/ a 18.5" barrel..the lug is moved further out on the barrel i found that the factory magazine spring was suprisingly week & added a vang comp heavier spring...[i also lost 1rd capacity]..when i did that i also added a vang comp stainless steel follower

Nice. I do like that. I would have to add the ghost rings though. They make a Remington police model just like your but it comes with the Wilson combat ghost rings

Pistol grips are cool for wow factor, just make sure it has a proper buttstock if you intend on hitting anything when you pull the trigger. Just my 2 cents. I have a new 870, and the quality is okay. Swapped the extractor with a better quality one and swapped the cheap plastic followed with a stainless steel one. Happy with the outcome.

I dont want a straight pistol grip. I like them on a normal stock like my Knox spec ops NRS

oh yeah...looking at the pic..i added a vang comp jumbo safety...it makes a big diffrence if you have a buttstock w/ a pistol grip....much easier to snap the safety off...you can feel it & dont have to look down & find it

I gave 575 for my Mossber 930 JM Pro, and seen where they are hitting shelves for about 600-650. I say go with the JM Pro because it has Nordic parts already, is threaded for chokes, and I prefer a 22" brl over a 18" right now. Eventually I may get the 18" brl, and a 26-28" brl for hunting but having 9 rds at hand is awful nice. Weight wise it is about the same as an 870 so that should not be a concern.

S&J Hardware makes some really good jumbo safeties. I've read a lot of great reviews, many say they're better than the others mentioned here. I just ordered a jumbo safety and follower package on a certain auction site for $30 shipped.

Just to completely confuse everything, I'd like to suggest either:
FNH SLP
Fastest semi-auto shotgun around and it works better than most with many lower power loads.
Or
KelTec KSG
Yes, its a KelTec! But its short, has room for a ton of shells, and the newer iterations of it are pretty reliable as long as you shuck that pump action all the way.
Both brands have outstanding warranties much like Busse.

I'd love to have a KSG. Just not keen on paying $2000 for a gun with a msrp of $820.

SP I feel the same way. Honestly I don't want to spend a lot of money on anything right now. I want to have the gun and accesories I wanted for $600 or less. This will probably be a mid to end of summer buy/build as I'm still job hunting and need to pay for a few truck repairs first.
I would love a semi auto but its going to be a large chunk of money:
Vs if I get a pump. I can spend some money. Wait a few months. Add a part. Wait a few months add another parts.
If I do a semi auto, it would have to be purchased next fall probably unless I sold some kin. But everyone on the forums seem to regret selling kin they love.
So I'm going to probably do the slow and steady and see what becomes avalible when the time is right.

I would take the KSG. I love the bullpup design and you don't have to hassle with the NFA paperwork that I will have to file when I cut the barrel on my 20 gauge 870.

Yep it's freaking awesome but it's really over priced in the market. Most guns are about $100 dollars cheaper than the factory MSRP. Not a grand + over

Those KSGs are some fun little toys <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif" alt="" />
Well worth it if you can find one a little closer to MSRP than 2 grand.
I don't know if I'd necessarily trust my life to it though, they are super easy to short shuck, but it might just come down to shooting it enough.
The FNH SLP is a really nice gun and I think it would probably be worth saving up for, but I have no personal experience with that one.

Here are some of my thoughts in no particular order.
The shotgun market where I am in Ohio is terrible right now. Everyone bought up everything and I feel like manufacturers are rushing to get product out. I could not find a new Mossberg 500 12 ga. field gun for a coworkers son for 3 months. I also believe that you should try and find a Rem 870 used police gun. I got a Highway Patrol model with extended magazine adn side saddle last year for $299. It is marked up on the outside but like new on the inside.
Differences between Police and Express off my head from what I remember from armorers school. Express made on assembly line, police is made start to finish by 1 guy per gun. Each police is patterned and tested, they test and pattern 1 from the batch of express. Express is baked enamel like something or other and the police is parkerized. Express has MIM extractor and not designed to be kept loaded magazine spring. Police is machined extractor and extra power mag spring designed to be kept loaded. There was something else in the trigger mechanism too but I would have to look it up. I have told firends to handle an express they like and just replace the extractor and mag spring if they want to do it cheap. I would never buy a new police shotgun myself unless I could get it at dealer price or something.
Early express shotguns did not have plastic trigger guards and the magazine tube was not crimped, I have one in my safe. However they did start crimping them pretty soon but still kept metal trigger guard until a "few" years ago.
Mossberg 590A1 fixes two of the three biggest problems of the 590. They have a metal trigger guard and a metal safety. I have had plastic safety mossbergs engage while shooting buckshot in training. Never seen that happen with the metal safety. Last problem they have is spring not designed to be kept loaded in my opinion. Not sure if A1 is or not because I replaced my with a Wolf that was designed for that right away.
I use a Browning Maxus to hunt ducks and I love it. I don't think I can bring myself to trust a gas operated shotgun for defense though. The horror stories might just be stories but I have seen semi autos fail in the field.
Putting ghost ring sights on a remington 870 is not that hard. Just about any gunsmith or machinist can do it. I myself like the rifle sighted smooth bore slug barrel on my OSP shotgun almost as much as my ghost ring 590A1.
Ohh yeah, you can drill out the crimp on the Express 870 so you can put a mag extension on it, I have done it myself. You just need to sand the inside good to make sure there are no burrs.
Be prepared.......It is more than a motto it is a way of life.

So I got to hand a KSG the other day. Pretty cool but not worth $1980.
I got to handle a benelli nova tactical the other day. Thoughts are I liked everything except the forend had more slop than the 870. I didn't notice this in the super mag though. If I got it I would have to add a mag tube and side saddle
The 870 express tactical felt familiar so to speak. And if I got that I already have a Knox spec ops NRS for it. I would have to upgrade the extractor. And add a side saddle. I'm not sure how good the finish is though.
The ghost rings in the benelli are tanks. Totally awesome. The remington one I worry about breaking because they don't have the wings protecting them.
The ghost rings on the benelli seem like they would be more accurate but the remington ghost rings are very fast to sight through.
I have tried to find info on used LEO shotguns because I can fix a rough finish and save some money that way. Can you tell me how you did it?

They had them at Vance's in Columbus. Piles of them, long gone now though. I think Vance's in Columbus and Kiesler's in Indiana buy most of them in this area, then they sometimes sell them in their stores and sometimes elsewhere. Good luck. If you can find an older 870 express I would put on these http://xssights.com/index.php?nID=sights&cID=Sights&pID=sights&sID=shotgunTheir customer service with me recently was great. Of course Vang Comp is pretty awesome too. https://vangcomp.com/gun_accessories.htmlI had a Benelli Nova once and could not get over the fat, toy feeling reciver.

Well I think I said something a couple months ago, but my shotgun plans fell through. I didn't get to my Mom and Dad's sale in time to get the guns I wanted to keep and they all sold! That's OK though as Patty and I came out REAL good on the sale and sale of the house.
Anyway, I saw a shotgun today I hadn't heard of. A tristar. It's a tactical pump (pistol grip, hi-viz front sight protected by "Wings" ghost ring rear and 5+1 capability). One thing I had never heard of before is that it has a forward assist on the pump. I mean there is a spring around the magazine tube that shoves the pump FORWARD after you rack the slide to the rear. And the bolt will not stay open with this feature, but you can remove the spring and it will function as a normal pump. $267.00 at a new sporting/outdoors store that opened up about 30 miles away.
AND I also stopped by a GS and they have 20ga tactical Weatherby pumps, same setup at the tristar (without the forward assist) but selling for about 300-325.
OK, question is do I NEED a 12ga? I have hunted all sorts of game (NEVER been waterfowl hunting) with a 20 and never felt under gunned. I really like the feel of the Weatherby better than the Tristar. It was lighter of course, just a bit shorter and mounted to my shoulder easier/faster and didn't get snagged on my shirt. So for a house gun and maybe even a "The Barbarians are at the gate" situation, what is your take on the 20 over the 12. Can I do OK with the 20. I am thinking that I could also carry more shells for the 20 for the same weight as the 12s would be.
If I got the 20 I would probably use slugs and #2 buckshot, or maybe #1, nothing smaller unless I was hunting with it. Oh and I think it has screw in choke tubes!

I don't know why a 20 guage wouldn't work It might also be easier on Patty than a 12 guage if she ever needed to use it

not much help but i think a lot of those shotguns are made in turkey. i googled a bunch of models last year and reviews are all over the place. seems old companies become new companies and all sorts of stuff i couldn't keep up with. if i was to pick one it would most likely be base on a gut feeling and the warranty.
i thought i wanted a cz shotgun which is made in turkey and sold by cz. it only took me two seconds to realize it wasn't a gun I wanted. felt like a toy and the finish made it look even more like a toy. even the wood didn't seem like what I would expect for a 12 gauge semiauto shotgun. but there are a handful of decent reviews online about them. I'll stick with my gut feeling on it though.

About 2 or 3 years ago my one nephew bought himself a Dominion Arms (made by Norinco) coach gun After the second replacement gun failed in less than ten months (not one of the three lasted more than a couple of boxes of shells)the store let him take a replacement pump action shotgun made by optima (made in Turkey) That gun has worked real well for him however his dad bought him a Mossy 590A1 last Christmas so I doubt that the optima is seen much use since then

Forgot to mention... The Remington 870 ATACs has all the features you're after: pistol grip stock, extended magazine tube, and ghost rings. It also have removable Rem-Chokes. http://www.remington.com/products/f...el-870-express-tactical-a-tacs-camo.aspx

I saw one the day after I picked up my GSR . Probably would have gotten that and should have. I also held the benelli supernova tactical with the pistol grip and ghostring sights and that was a quality shotgun.
FYI the GSR has been a pain in the [censored]!!!!

One of the troopers here has an 870 12ga with pistol grip and a 24 inch barrel (It's his waterfowl gun). He wants my 700VLS, a rifle I don't use (MAYBE had 30 rounds through it) but I really don't want to get rid of it, so I am considering just buying another shotgun.

Sorry I had to be censored. Just a little upset with the whole situation. I like the censorship I don't have to rewrite half my posts. lol I have very little experience with semiautos but for pump I agree with Arch we use the 870 police models at work and they take a licking and keep on ticking the Mossberg 500 is hard to beat also that is what we used in the sandbox.

VANCE, I need to look into that for my 20 gauge tactical. I'm not sure what replacement parts are available. I know there isn't much available as far as accessories go, so I'm afraid I might be out of luck with upgraded replacement parts too.

Just was in Wally World and they had a mossberg 930 tactical for $499.99 It's a semi auto and I used the waterfowl model when guiding hunts in NY and sand mud and water never made it stop once on me. Randy should check that out

WHAT!
Hehe, me either until earlier this week. Seems that Weatherby is now making (OK, having made in Turkey) two different home defense or assault shotguns. The PA459 and SA459. Pump action and semi auto action shotguns in both 12 and 20 ga. They look nice and the 20 at least feels really nice (Empty, saw it in a Gun Store). They have gotten pretty good write ups.

Our Chief deputy bought a Stoger 12 pump for duty carry and has used it a lot. Never a problem with it in any way. He finally sold it as he went to an AR15 instead.

It's hard to find a comfortable LOP for a shotgun. It seems. And I'm 6'2" average. The best option I've find is a adjustable BlackHawk knoxx Spec ops nrs Seems I like a different lenght for slugs, waterfowl, pheasant. None are perfect for all

I have spent many rounds (and hours) at the butt of various 870s, my favourite variety had 12-14inch barrels and fixed speed feed butts. I was only party to a conversation with some of my old team mates where we were recalling the day that I was in the front seat of a car with the 870 pointed into the back of the car and explaining to an individual at that the first hiccup I was going to put his head out the back window and onto the road (we were moving at the time).... this is why I like those shorter varieties, much handier in confined spaces...

Prohibited here for private ownership, 18 was the limit here for a privately (mine was 20) owned 870. The 12-14s that I used then (and still occasionally now) are Govt owned.

Yeah I think and SBR shotgun would be fun but I'm not sure what I would use it for. I really like those benelli tactical guns. I'm asking local shops about that or what the cost of an 870 police mag would be. No quotes yet. One showed me a saiga he has on commission for $1100 right now. It's never fired. Has an ATI collapsible M4 type stock, cantilever optic rail with Russian red dot, nice quad rail, mock suppressor/barrel shroud. Pretty neat set up.
