Randy, if Ray has an extra 12 volt battery and a power inverter he should still be able to use his grinder ; he just has to match the wattage with the inverter. A solar panel would keep his battery charged as well. wink

I was referring to if there were no electric of any kind available.

Serious question. If you lost power for a long time is there a way you could still roast your own beans?

Well, I have a large woodpile and a couple of stoves. Coffee has been roasted for centuries before electricity was invented. It is a bit more difficult and the roasts would not be as tailored or consistent as they are with my roasters but it is definitely doable. I would put the drum from my roaster on a spit over the fire or just roast the beans in a frying pan. I also have several different types of hand grinders for regular coffee, espresso and Turkish coffee. All I would need is water.
In answer to your other question, most of the coffee I drink is from beans I have roasted myself. But I don’t roast during late fall and winter because I can’t open the doors and windows and have the exhaust fans running. My wife says that cats have delicate lungs and roasting produces byproducts that can hurt them. So I buy coffee to use after my roasted beans run out. The other point is that I haven’t been able to roast for over three months because of my back injury and now it’s too late. I also like to drink hot tea during the winter and just received my winter shipment of loose teas, a couple of stainless steel infusers and another tea mug.
Thanks for thinking of me concerning civet coffee but I think I will pass. If you want, you can send me a couple of pounds of single origin Kona beans instead.

Ray, I checked out a Hawaiian coffee site and got completely confused! If it’s not a K-pod or store bought ground, I am at a loss.

I have 3 heavy duty 12 volt batteries for my ham radio gear and an inverter but never got around to setting up a solar charger.
