DotD- yah- you need really great backup in that climate. Keep putting it together, Momaw has great tips on this

im pretty sure mauna loa and mauna kea usually have snowy/ice on the dark side of the volcanoes i could be wrong though. it might have all thawed off from global climate change. in the 80s guys would ski it!!!

Wow- that would be cool. Did the one on Maui get hit ?
Yes- the GC is BEAUTIFUL and a long paddle/hike trip ( no motors) is fantastic. Am going back again next Sept. Way cool

Nah, the maui one (haleakala) rarely ever snows. when i was doing some volunteering there 2 years back we had VERY faint snowflakes but no real snow

there is a sea to summit route for haleakala but i believe its more jungle-y than mauna loa, and it might still be closed.

Hey Klink- it was actually quite challenging. I exercised all year to get ready for it. Amazing trip. I am actually doing that and two other big river trips. I realy like the whitewater but also like the hikes.

About the closest thing I have ever done to that was a week-long canoe trip in the Boundary Water Canoe Area. No big rapids but it was certainly beautiful.

Yes- that is supposed to be a great trip !!We are also doing sit on kayaks here on the Oregon Coast. It will allow us to both practice survival techniques - plus photography and many other things. Big water is fun- but that s a small part of it. What kind of canoe did you use ?

The outfitter used 17 ft. Grumman aluminum canoes back then - over 30 years ago!
