I freehand my Moras on Arkansas stones, but you couls use just about anything. On the ones that are scandi ground, just remember to lay that bevel flat to the stone and have at it, that's your angle.

On the others, the Lansky system will work great, and if you're going to buy a Lansky sharpening system you should definitely get the diamond stones. Although the diamonds aren't really needed for sharpening Moras, that will make quicker work of all your sharpening, and will allow you to reprifile much easier and faster. Also, it is a lot easier to sharpen steels like S30V and 154CM with the diamond stones.

I use a belt grinder to convex all of my big knives, but as I stated earlier I freehand the smaller blades. On the smaller blades I use a mixture of good old Arkansas stones and DMT diamond stones.

i agree with tolly. moras can be sharpened on anything. I use a lansky set the Pro one its ok, i got it as a gift. for sharpening at work i use the ceramic rods (that little black square).

i WISH i had a belt grinder/sander because i SOOO badly want to convex my big mora and sod and i know its gonna take a while by hand.

i wasnt quite sleeping it was my turn for the baby and he was FUSSSSSSYY

ill snap some pics of my foam shaprner its a knockoff of the mousepad but alot more give....the materials are just some junk i found laying around our nursery.

Any advice on convexing by hand would be greatly appreciated (although im sure HornDog has a post somewheres about it )

heres my belt. i used a cobra stitch/weave/braid. its commonly used on paracord bracelets.

and the new convex sharpener. i think the foam might be a fishtank filter, i used some old plywood that magically fit perfect. i didnt have any thin cloth around just some blue shop towel so i used that to give t more glide which hopefully get a better wrap to convex. i think ill try my mora first then the big mora then the SOD if all goes well.

Hey mcjhrobinson,

I'm afraid your set up might be a little tricky to convex with. While it would no doubt allow for a lot of wrap around of the sandpaper and very quick rounding/convexing of the bevel, I'm afraid it's going to be too much and you're not ever going to be able to get a sharp edge. You do not need very much "give" in the backing material. Just think about how firm a mousepad is, and they are ideal.

One of the best tips I can think of for anyone thinking of trying convexing for the first time is to remember NOT to push down on the knife. On medium to big bladed knives the weight of the blade is will supply plenty of pressure to get the proper convexed edge. On small, lightweight knives you only need to apply very little prssure. Let me reapeat, VERY little pressure.

Here's a good tutorial for convexing Sharpening Tutorial

Tolly THANKS! im glad i didnt try anything yet. i do have a mouse pad somewhere around here. i will set it up for that. one question though if the mousepad has a hard backing already do you think i would need to add any wood for more backing support? maybe ill try it on my really hardly used moras. also is it possible to see the convex by eye?

i just got my SOD and now im looking at the bark river KSF machete, i like the golok but i dont know if there is a point sharp enough on it for me.

Hi Ordawg,

I use a DMT diamond bifold and good old automotive wet/dry sandpaper on a
mouse pad.
The DMT's are Coarse, Medium, and Fine. Use that to reprofile, then start
on a coarse grit for the sandpaper up to about 1500 grit.

Cheers
