The mousepad will work fine just laid on top of a flat table or something similar. Remeber, with knives like light weight Moras and smaller pocket knives you only need a little bit of pressure, and on the bigger knives the weight of the blade is all that's required.

You will be able to see the convex starting to happen with the naked eye, but it's very useful to have some kind of magnification especially when you first get started so that you can really see and understand what's happening. Even an el cheapo magnifying glass from Wal-Mart will work.

Also, when you buy your sandpaper try to get wet/dry sandpaper. That's the grayish black looking stuff that comes in all kinds of grits up to 1500 and even finer.

Also, here are some pics showing a way to use a simple 3/4"-1" thick block of wood that's 4" to 8" long to build a portable convex sharpening set up, and one of them shows a block that also has a strip of leather on one side as a strop loaded with green compound. I've made lots of these. You just wrap the mousepad/sandpaper around the block and insert snugly into the slit and use a small Carpenter's wood bisuit wedged in there to hold it all in place.

Great looking setup on that pad for sharpening there.
I just went to the hardware store and got one of those hand sanders that
you can put sandpaper on. Glued a chunk of mouse pad on the bottom and
it works really good as well.
Same idea as yours is.

The magnifying glass works okay, but I found an old camera lens at a
second hand store really cheap. It gives me about a 16X mag on stuff
so I can see the knife edge really nicely.

Cheers

Ordawg,
I don't have one handy no. There's nothing special to it. Just a sanding
block from the hardware store. Has wire clips so that it's easy to change
the paper.
My grits go from 80 to 1500. Would have gone higher, but couldn't find any.
It's all by hand too. No machines, although I want to get one of those belt
grinders.
One day perhaps.

You lucky bum...congratulations <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/thumbup.gif" alt="" />
You forget that I'm in Canada...your $100 on sale is probably $300 for me <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/blush.gif" alt="" />

I have a friend though who has a 4 inch KMG belt grinder, so I can convex
all my knives right down to toothpicks if I want... <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif" alt="" />

Better that it's at my friends house.

Man, I just found out Jody Samson died on Dec 27, 2008. He was a legend in every sense of the word. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/frown.gif" alt="" />

He complained of flu like symptoms for about a week before. He died of pneumonia in his workshop.
