Today is an important anniversary in the history of this nation.

On April 19, 1775, British General Thomas Gage dispatched 700 British troops commanded by Lt. Col. Francis Smith to Concord, Massachusetts to seize munitions that the Patriots had been stockpiling. Word of the British departure from Boston was quickly spread by Paul Revere, and by the time the British reached the village green at Lexington they found 70 Minutemen waiting for them under the command of Capt. John Parker. When ordered by the British to lay down their arms and disperse, The Shot Heard Round the World was fired and the American Revolution was begun. Nobody knows for sure who fired that shot. The British then fired upon the Minutemen, killing 8 and wounding 10. The British suffered 1 wounded.

The British continued on to Concord and the Americans retreated to the North Bridge just outside the town. While the main body of soldiers accomplished their mission of seizing the gunpowder, a small contingent of British troops skirmished again with the colonists, now numbering several hundred. 3 British soldiers and 2 Americans were killed. As they returned to Boston, the British were under constant assault from Massachusetts militiamen, who inflicted 273 more casualties.

So today I am going to drink a toast to those fine Americans who stood up and gave their lives for this nation on that fateful day.

O beautiful for spacious skies,
For amber waves of grain,
For purple mountain majesties
Above the fruited plain!
America! America!
God shed his grace on thee
And crown thy good with brotherhood
From sea to shining sea!

O beautiful for pilgrim feet
Whose stern impassioned stress
A thoroughfare of freedom beat
Across the wilderness!
America! America!
God mend thine every flaw,
Confirm thy soul in self-control,
Thy liberty in law!

O beautiful for heroes proved
In liberating strife.
Who more than self their country loved
And mercy more than life!
America! America!
May God thy gold refine
Till all success be nobleness
And every gain divine!

O beautiful for patriot dream
That sees beyond the years
Thine alabaster cities gleam
Undimmed by human tears!
America! America!
God shed his grace on thee
And crown thy good with brotherhood
From sea to shining sea!

O beautiful for halcyon skies,
For amber waves of grain,
For purple mountain majesties
Above the enameled plain!
America! America!
God shed his grace on thee
Till souls wax fair as earth and air
And music-hearted sea!

O beautiful for pilgrims feet,
Whose stem impassioned stress
A thoroughfare for freedom beat
Across the wilderness!
America! America!
God shed his grace on thee
Till paths be wrought through
wilds of thought
By pilgrim foot and knee!

O beautiful for glory-tale
Of liberating strife
When once and twice,
for man's avail
Men lavished precious life!
America! America!
God shed his grace on thee
Till selfish gain no longer stain
The banner of the free!

O beautiful for patriot dream
That sees beyond the years
Thine alabaster cities gleam
Undimmed by human tears!
America! America!
God shed his grace on thee
Till nobler men keep once again
Thy whiter jubilee!

Somewhere out there, I want to believe there are Minutemen watching over us, saying among themselves "It was worth it. They remember."

Here's to John Hancock! Here's to Samuel Adams! Here's to Joseph Warren! Here's to William Dawes! Here's to PAUL REVERE!

Here's to a bunch of farmers and brewers and shopowners who looked down the barrel of an overpowering force and into the face of tyranny and said NO! Not one step more! This is where we stand!

Sorry to all of our international Yarders but this is America, land of defiant pride, land of courage and resourcefulness, land of Revere, land of Washington, land of Franklin and land of Lincoln!

Hahaha don't even get me started <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" />

By the rude bridge that arched the flood,
Their flag to April’s breeze unfurled,
Here once the embattled farmers stood,
And fired the shot heard round the world.

The foe long since in silence slept;
Alike the conqueror silent sleeps;
And Time the ruined bridge has swept
Down the dark stream which seaward creeps.

On this green bank, by this soft stream,
We set to-day a votive stone;
That memory may their deed redeem,
When, like our sires, our sons are gone.

Spirit, that made those heroes dare,
To die, and leave their children free,
Bid Time and Nature gently spare
The shaft we raise to them and thee.

Concord Hymn, by Ralph Waldo Emerson
