I am trying to put a pack together and I am unsure which way I should go. I am not looking for best brands etc. I want to know which is more practical to have and why.

I am leaning toward the folding bucksaw because I think it can handle larger diameter logs with greater ease but maybe I am wrong.

I use a folding Kershaw (basically the Bahco Laplander) Swedish steel, very nice. Locking blade, lightweight but cuts like a chainsaw!

Check it out here.

What diameter logs will it cut and level of difficulty in doing so? Are there any disadvantages with this type of saw?

I would like to use it for firewood, shelter building and possibly bush craft furniture.

I went through a 5 inch (diameter) tree that had fallen, but was not quite dead. It was tough, but the saw went through pretty effortlessly in about a minute.

This is the saw all the British bushcrafters use to do all the things you just listed.

It is excellent.

There are other good saws by Gerber, Silky and so forth, but I really like my Kershaw.

I got this http://www.svensaw.com/ saw a couple weeks ago and it blows the doors off of all the folding saws I have or have tried. It weighs a pound, but it actually works and saves me from carrying a hatchet.

I am also a huge fan of the SvenSaw. Mine's been going strong for about 10 years now. Lightweight, durable, and eats through wood like a warm knife through butter.

Silky saw for a folding saw. Can get many different sizes of blades, different teeth sizes and can buy replacement saw blades for them.

I've been using a svensaw for... decades. One my second one now. Takes a few seconds to set up, but eats the wood well. Been thinking about a quick opening 7-8 inch folder though as well. Maybe that Kershaw is worth a try. I know Gerber makes one too. Any others?

I have a silky N-60 and it has taken down trees up to about 9 inches with no problem. It's great when you don't feel like swinging a 'chete. Easy maintenance too. Quick wipe down and a shot of silicon and it's good to go.
