I don't know of any other ways. If you want to keep the convex grind it pays to learn the mousepad/sandpaper method. It took me about a year of practice to learn how to do it right (I am real slow sometimes) but once you get the hang of it, it works great!

Or you can just reprofile the edge and use more standard methods to sharpen it.
