I mean, I'm not a gun expert, but I know kimber makes good reliable guns and they make a .22 version of the 1911, (so it looks super sweet)
I think its more of a target pistol though.
idk you might want to look into it, but they are a little pricey.

Also, kimber makes a .22lr conversion kit (for about 300$) for about any .45 1911's.
so if you get 1911 and then get the .22lr conversion kit, you can make it .22 for practice and getting you and your family comfortable and than maybe switch it back to .45 after a while of shooting and getting used to for some serious home defense!
it might be worth the money in the long run, instead of getting the .22 and than upgrading later.
