I think your point is obvious. When I batoned with mine, I just hammered away at the curverd tip end, which BTW really reduces the wasted energy of a blow glancing off of a linear slope. At 1/3in thick, the [censored] thing just split would so well I didn't need to hammer the guard end.
That damage was caused by a strike to the tip end of the blade, not the guard end.
